Kissing Rock
Stationed prominently at the entrance to
Evergreen Walk on the Illinois campus, Kissing Rock became a symbol of
Carthage romance. Over the years, the Rock has been venue of numerous
romantic trysts, the recipient of thousands of coats of paint, and an
inevitable target for graffiti. One tradition recounts that any woman
sitting on the rock was obligated to kiss the man who found her there.
According to College history, the Class of 1913 found the two and-a-half ton
chunk of granite in a field near Carthage and moved the stone to the campus.
The Rock immediately became part of College life.
Moved to the Kenosha campus in the mid-1960s by members of the
Beta Phi Epsilon fraternity, Kissing Rock sits proudly facing Lake Michigan between
Lentz and Tarble Halls. The Rock, steeped in traditions and memories, provides a
tangible link between the past and the present for Carthage College.
