Carthage College takes recycling and its benefits very seriously. Recycling efforts range from placing recycling receptacles in all campus buildings, to using recycled materials whenever possible in new construction and renovation. The College has focused on making it easy for all students, faculty, staff and visitors to recycle.
At Carthage, most recycling is single-stream recycling, which means recyclable paper, plastic, cans and glass can be mixed in one bin. Items are then sorted at a separate waste management facility through the use of various mechanized screens and optical sorting technologies.
Single-stream recycling programs have greatly increased recycling rates, recovering as much as three times the amount of recyclable materials. Carthage contracts with Waste Management, which became the first major solid waste company to focus on residential single-stream recycling in 2001.
