Welcome to the Humanities Division of Carthage College.
We in the Humanities at Carthage believe that our areas of study — Classics, English, History, Modern Languages, Philosophy and Religion — form the “Heart and Soul” of a liberal arts education, especially one grounded in the Lutheran tradition of insightful, broadly based intellectual exploration of all areas of human thought. Our goal in encouraging our students to engage these areas of human inquiry is that we are convinced that such encounters will form our students into productive and intellectually curious citizens.
Within the Humanities students can converse with thinkers ancient and modern whose ideas, images and narratives have shaped both Western culture and those around the world.
In studies offered by the Classics and Philosophy departments, students can see how the philosophy and literature from the Greco-Roman world provides the foundation of much modern thought. They can also wrestle with modern thinkers who challenge these traditional modes of reasoning.
The English Department offers students not only opportunities to appreciate literature from all corners of the English speaking world, it also provides many opportunities for students to stretch their own creative muscles by producing their own original narratives and poetry.
Students interested in investigating the rich backgrounds of Western society, Latin America and Asia will find a home in the History Department. Through the Religion Department, students can grapple with the complexities of many the religious traditions that have shaped Western culture and that will become increasingly more important in the global society of the 21st century.
The Modern Language department enables students to experience these global opportunities directly by equipping students to experience diverse cultures directly, both through language courses taught by people from those areas where the language is spoken and through providing study abroad and travel opportunities to visit other parts of the world.
So, come and join us in the Humanities at Carthage. Engage new and exciting ideas! Embrace new vistas of learning and experience!
