MUSIC 643-1 Chamber Ensemble Tour to Japan, 4 credits (James Ripley)
Wind Orchestra Japan Study/Tour is a class that will explore the history, culture, society and language of Japan on a basic level. Students will also meet to prepare music of Japan and Western European culture for a concert to be given later in the J-Term.
Dr. Ripley, in conjunction with the TEPs from Japan, will deliver instruction and prepare the students in the aforementioned matters.
The two week study period at Carthage will culminate in a two week tour of Japan, examining traditional centers of culture such as Kyoto and Nara along with more modern centers of historic importance such as Osaka and Hiroshima. Musical centers in Kurashiki and Hamamatsu will also be included in the visit. The ensemble will be in residence at the Sakuyo University in Kurashiki for seven days before performing a concert in collaboration with the Wind Philharmony at the University Concert Hall.

Prerequisites: Registration in this class is limited to those selected by audition to the Wind Orchestra.
