MODERN LANGUAGE 671-1 Contemporary Spanish Film: Topics and Trends, 4 credits (Beatriz Gomez-Acuna)

In this course we will study the major trends of contemporary Spanish cinema (post 1975). We will discuss the influence the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) had on contemporary filmmakers and analyze the various ways in which history is retold. The course will also deal with the importance and influence of popular culture in cinematography. Finally, we will become acquainted with the works of two of the most renowned directors in the world: Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar. Lectures and selected readings will provide the students with the necessary background and tools for critical analysis.

Prerequisites: The class will take place in English and there is no language pre-requisite.
