Need-based Financial Aid

In addition to no-need awards, many students receive additional assistance; grants, scholarships, loans, and work; based on demonstrated financial need. Every applicant qualifies for some assistance. Just file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) between January 1 and February 15 of your senior year for fullest consideration.

Grants and scholarships come from many sources. Carthage provides the bulk of grant funds. The federal government and some state governments also provide substantial grant assistance.

Need-based aid also may take the form of loans and work. Every student may borrow through the Federal Stafford Student Loan Programs simply by filing the FAFSA. First-year students may borrow up to $2,625. Terms are quite favorable, with a low interest rate, a six-month grace period, and long-term repayment schedules. All Stafford Loans offer deferred principal; most offer deferred interest until after graduation.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is the primary source of student employment at Carthage. The College guarantees students with FWS a job the first day of the semester. The majority of students may earn approximately $1,200 by working an average of 8 hours weekly.
