Lincoln Scholarship ApplicationThe Lincoln Scholarship deadline has passed for fall 2008 freshmen. The Lincoln Scholarship ProgramTo compete for the scholarships offered under the Lincoln Scholarship Program, students must be admitted to Carthage and return the completed Lincoln Scholarship Program application and required essay, postmarked or submitted online no later than December 11, 2008. The on-campus competition consists of an essay and faculty/staff interview and will be held in February or March. Finalists invited to the on-campus portion of the competition will be notified by the end of January. The Lincoln, Clausen, Ruud, and Hay Scholarships incorporate all Carthage assistance. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 is required for renewal. The Lincoln Scholarships symbolize the College's strong commitment to students seeking the challenge of the Carthage Honors Program. Named for Abraham Lincoln, an early Trustee of the College, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition, room and board for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study, an award worth over $130,000. Carthage selects three Lincoln Scholars from the incoming freshman class. The Clausen Scholarships extend the College's commitment to excellence even further. Named for distinguished alumnus A. W. 'Tom' Clausen, '44, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition for up to four consecutive years, an award that exceeds $100,000. Carthage selects three Clausen Scholars from the incoming freshman class. The Ruud Scholarships continue the College's commitment to students exhibiting academic and leadership excellence. Offered through the generosity of Susan (Young, '69) and Alan Ruud, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study, an award that exceeds $100,000. Carthage selects three Ruud Scholars from the incoming freshman class. The Hay Scholarships: Named for President Lincoln's private secretary and Secretary of State for Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, the John M. Hay Scholarship will be awarded to eight competitors from the incoming freshman class. In tribute to Secretary Hay's leadership and diplomacy, these scholarships will cover 75% of tuition for up to four consecutive years, an award that exceeds $75,000. |

The Carthage commitment to scholars extends beyond the seventeen scholarships in the Lincoln Scholarship Program. Top students typically receive a substantial package of multiple no need awards, ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, or more. Many qualify for additional need-based assistance, making Carthage quite affordable. Carthage Honors Program and Lincoln Scholarship Program candidates are selected from among students who are admitted to Carthage and who have submitted the separate Lincoln Scholarship Application, along with the required essay, postmarked or submitted online no later than December 11, 2008. The Office of Admissions screens application and identifies candidates most suitable for the Honors Program and for the Lincoln Scholarship Program. The College notifies these students in mid-January and invites them to campus in February or March for one of four Carthage Scholar Days, offering a unique opportunity to interact with Carthage faculty, potential classmates, and Carthage Honors students, while competing in the Lincoln Scholarship Program. During the campus visit, prospective Lincoln Scholars will complete a second essay and have a conversation with two faculty/staff members. Parents are invited to an interactive session to learn more about the benefits of a Carthage education You must submit your application for admission and supporting materials to Carthage by December 11, 2008 to be eligible for the Lincoln Scholarship Program. The Lincoln, Clausen, Ruud, and Hay Scholarships may incorporate all Carthage assistance. Scholarship amounts for fall 2009 are subject to change. |
