The Lincoln Scholarship Program

The Lincoln Scholarships symbolize the College's strong commitment to students seeking the challenge of the Carthage Honors Program. Named for Abraham Lincoln, an early Trustee of the College, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition, room and board for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study, an award worth more than $140,000. Carthage selects three Lincoln Scholars from the incoming freshman class.

The Clausen Scholarships extend the College's commitment to excellence even further. Named for distinguished alumnus A. W. 'Tom' Clausen, '44, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition for up to four consecutive years, an award of more than $110,000. Carthage selects three Clausen Scholars from the incoming freshman class.

The Ruud Scholarships continue the College's commitment to students exhibiting academic and leadership excellence. Offered through the generosity of Susan (Young, '69) and Alan Ruud, this prestigious scholarship covers full tuition for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate study, an award of more than $110,000. Carthage selects three Ruud Scholars from the incoming freshman class.

The Hay Scholarships: Named for President Lincoln's private secretary and Secretary of State for Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, the John M. Hay Scholarship will be awarded to eleven competitors from the incoming freshman class. In tribute to Secretary Hay's leadership and diplomacy, these scholarships will cover 75% of tuition for up to four consecutive years, an award that exceeds $80,000.

Qualified Lincoln Scholarship Program applicants will be notified in mid-January 2010. Finalists will be invited to the Carthage campus for a competition in February or March.

The Carthage commitment to scholars extends beyond the twenty scholarships in the Lincoln Scholarship Program. Top students typically receive a substantial package of multiple no-need awards, ranging from $5,000 to $11,000, or more. Many qualify for additional need-based assistance, making Carthage quite affordable.

Carthage Honors Program and Lincoln Scholarship Program candidates are selected from among students who are admitted to Carthage and who have submitted the separate Lincoln Scholarship Application, along with the required personal statement, postmarked or submitted online no later than December 11, 2009.

The Office of Admissions screens applications and identifies candidates most suitable for the Honors Program and for the Lincoln Scholarship Program. The College notifies these students in mid-January and invites them to campus in February or March for one of five Carthage Scholars Days, offering a unique opportunity to interact with Carthage faculty, potential classmates, and Carthage Honors students, while competing in the Lincoln Scholarship Program.

During the campus visit, prospective Lincoln Scholars will complete an essay and have a conversation with two faculty/staff members. Parents are invited to an interactive session to learn more about the benefits of a Carthage education.

You must submit your application for admission and supporting materials including high school transcripts and ACT or SAT score (we accept either test) to Carthage by December 11, 2009, to be eligible for the Lincoln Scholarship Program.

The Lincoln, Clausen, Ruud, and Hay Scholarships may incorporate all Carthage assistance.
