First Year Advisors

Ryan Ringhand

Ryan started at Carthage in the fall of 2007 as a first year advisor after spending nine years at Carroll University in various roles in residence life, advising, Greek Life, and career services.

A native of Monroe, Wis., Ryan graduated from Carroll University in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He earned his master's degree in student personnel administration from Concordia University in Wisconsin in 2002.

Ryan served as the acting registrar in 2008, which included serving on various academic committees. In his current position, he advises undecided freshmen and new transfer students, and teaches four sections of the College Success Seminar in the fall. As the assistant director, he coordinates the process of transitioning students to faculty advisors, manages the daily operation of the advising center, and communicates with the Admissions Office to coordinate individual advising appointments.

Ryan is married to Jennifer and has two sons, Jacob and Brett. They live in Elkhorn, Wis.


Mike Larry

A native of Racine, Wis., Mike is a 1989 Carthage graduate with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science. Mike started his Carthage career as an assistant football coach, Johnson Hall Director, and director of the Black Student Union. He created and served as Director of Service Learning program from 1995 to 1998 before becoming Director of Housing in 1998. In 2002, he moved to the Academic Advising Center role, which he currently holds.


Jane Spencer

Jane (Anderson) Spencer, '80, is a first year advisor in the Academic Advising Center. She has held this position since 2000. She works primarily with students interested in the natural sciences, physics, mathematics, and computer science.

Jane was born in Carthage, Ill., and hails from a Carthage family as both of her parents, brother, and sister are all Carthaginians. Graduating in 1980 and following a six-year position in sales and marketing in Rockford, Ill., Jane began her career here in 1986 in the Offices of Alumni Relations and Development, raising friends and funds for the College.

Her activities include: member of Spirit Alive Lutheran Church in Pleasant Prairie; advisor to a campus sorority, Kappa Phi Eta; member of Carthage Commencement Committee; and volunteer for the Central Westosha High School Booster Club and Music Parents Association.

She and her husband, Jack, '71, reside in Bristol, Wis., with their children, Annika and Erick. Jane also has two stepsons, Greg, '07, and Jeff, '11.


Laura Rogers

Kelle Laura Rogers has been employed by Carthage College since 1990 and has served as an academic advisor since 2001. Originally from Chicago, Kelle Laura is a 1985 graduate of Creighton University with a bachelor's of science degree in finance. In 1991, she was granted a Certificate of Completion from the Carthage Paralegal Studies Program. In 2010, she received a master's degree in education.

During her time at Carthage, she has been instrumental in establishing two student organizations: the Pals and Partners Program and Sigma Omega Sigma Sorority. Kelle Laura has worked with and served numerous Kenosha community agencies and institutions including the Christian Youth Council; Founding Board of Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha, Inc; Board of Directors, NAACP, Kenosha Branch; Board of Directors, Kenosha and Racine Community Action Agency; Kenosha Unified School District; and Leadership Kenosha.

She currently serves as a board director of the Urban League of Racine and Kenosha and is the chair of the City of Kenosha Juneteenth Festival. Kelle Laura volunteers at Edward Bain School of Language and Art (EBSCOLA) and enjoys singing with the Carthage Gospel Messengers choir and performing with the Carthage Red Line Drum Corps. She lives in Kenosha and has two daughters, Capri and Lois (Rogers) Young, '07.


Kathi Steinberg

A native of Kenosha, Kathi Steinberg received a bachelor of science degree in social science from Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Mich., in 1987. In 1991, she was hired by Carthage as a first-year advisor. June 2011 marks the completion of 20 years of service at Carthage. From 1997 to 2000, she also served as the associate director of advising services. For the last 10 years, she has held the position of education advisor in the Education Division.

In addition to the role of advisor, Kathi has kept physically active, serving in various capacities of instructing aerobics, since 1980. For the past 20 years she has been teaching water aerobics for the Exercise and Sport Science Department at Carthage.

Kathi is an active member of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Racine, where she has been a Eucharistic Minister since 2001.
