Academic Advising at Carthage

Academic Support Services

All academic resource programs are located in Hedberg Library.

The Tutoring Program

The Tutoring Program is a free program set up for Carthage students. Tutors are peers who are trained and referred by academic departments. Tutors offer individual or group assistance by appointment.

The Writing Center

The Brainard Writing Center is staffed by trained Writing Fellows who provide assistance for any written assignment. Students my drop in, but appointments are strongly recommended. Students may also schedule weekly one-on-one sessions with the same Writing Fellow to ensure continuing progress.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction is a nationally recognized program designed to increase students' academic performance in specially selected courses. Trained, upper-class students attend these courses and then facilitate discussion/review sessions outside of class. Participation in the program allows students to be more active in their learning process. National studies show that students who have participated in this method of study improve by as much as one letter grade.

Elements of College Learning

Offered through the Advising Center, this one-credit course enables participants to develop and enhance skills for academic success. The class focuses on skills significant to a smooth transition to college including: goal setting, time management, memory techniques, note taking, and test-taking strategies. Students are encouraged to talk with their advisor about the benefits of enrolling in this course.
