Computer Certification

If your room as been turned off, it will not be turned back on until we have looked at your computer and certified it for the following.

  • Has no viruses
  • If WinXP, it has been patched with Service Pack 2
  • Symantec anti-virus program with up-to-date definitions

We will install Symantec Anti-virus and remove any other anti-virus software you have on your computer. We will update the virus definitions and set them to update daily thereafter.

We will also check for and remove the following:

  • Peer-to-peer sharing programs such as Kazaa, Morpheus, BearShare, etc.
  • Spyware (These are programs the run in the background to track what you do on the internet. Spyware may well be causing unnecessary pop-ups on your computer as well as unnecessary traffic on the network.)

In order for us to check for and fix these things, we will be taking appointments. Contact the information desk at x4357 (HELP) to request an appointment. We will take 10 computers per day on Monday thru Thursday and five on Fridays. During busy time, only computers on the 'turned off rooms list' may be taken.

Once you have an appointment, do the following on the day of your appointment:

  1. Bring in your computer by noon on that day. If you have a desktop, bring in the main desktop or tower part of the computer only. We will use our own cables, monitor, mouse, and keyboard; do not bring those with you. If you have a laptop, bring in your power supply.
  2. You will be asked to fill out a form when you drop off your computer. You will be asked to agree that the Computer Services staff is authorized to work on your machine and are not responsible for any problems that result from work done on your computer.
  3. Be prepared to leave your computer for at least 48 hours. If your appointment is on Friday, we will try to finish by the end of the day, but we may need to keep it over the weekend.
  4. We will contact you when your computer is finished. You should pick it up rom the Circulation Desk between 8 am and 5 pm that day or the following day.
If your computer exhibits errors or Windows problems, we will not work on it until those are resolved. If the patches, fixes, or anti-virus software will not load or run, the room will not be turned back on until your computer is fixed and the software can be run or loaded; you may need to set up a second appointment for this to happen.
