Troubleshooting a connectivity problem

Below are some steps to try if you are experiencing a connectivity problem with your own computer in the residence halls at Carthage.

  1. MAKE SURE you have a HUB, not a router or switch. If you have a router (wireless or wired) you MUST disconnect it. It will cause problems to you and possibly many other people in your res hall. Hubs are available in the library for $50 each. They can be returned within 30 days with box for a full refund or after 30 days for a $20 refund. If you have a router, you can "turn it in" in exchange for a hub, and we will keep it until the end of the school year at which time, you can swap it back.

  2. TURN OFF 802.1x as follows:
    1. Click Start and go to Control Panel
    2. Double-click Network Connections
    3. Double-click your Local Area Connection (not 1394 or wireless)
    4. Click the Properties button
    5. Click on the Authentication tab
    6. UNCHECK "Enable Network Access control using IEEE 802.1x" and click on OK.
    7. Restart the computer

  3. UNBRIDGE your connections as follows
    1. Click Start and go to Control Panel
    2. Double-click Network Connections
    3. If you see no Bridge on this screen, your connections are not bridged, and you don't need to do this. If you do see a bridge...
    4. Right-click on your Local Area Connection and select "Remove from Bridge"
    5. You may want to unbridge ALL your connections if you plan to use anything other than your local area connection.
    6. Restart your computer.

  4. If when you try to register your computer with NetReg, you get "No lease found", do the following:
    1. Click Start -> Run Type in "cmd" and press Enter
    2. Type ipconfig /release
    3. Restart the computer

  5. If you have registered, but keep getting back to the registration screen, you may be a victim of a wireless router or another router in your res hall or you may be a victim of bad cached DNS info. Do this:
    1. Click Start -> Run Type in "cmd" and press Enter
    2. Type ipconfig /all
    3. Look for the IP address. If it is 192.168.something, you're getting someone else's DHCP. Check if anyone around you has a router and tell them to turn it off.
    4. If the IP number begins with 10.something, then you are getting a Carthage number. Type ipconfig /flushdns
    5. Restart your computer and try again.

  6. Check for Internet Connection Sharing in WinXP, which can also cause computers to hand out IP #s like routers. It can be turned off by going into the network connections control panel and to the Sharing tab. Make sure it's off.

If none of the above work, contact the Hedberg Library Information Desk at 262-551-5950. Note that we do not make "house calls" except in extreme conditions, and those may take up to two business days.
