Fees

There are no monthly or annual fees to connect to the network or internet at Carthage. However, each computer must have ethernet or wireless capability in order to access the network.

In some residence hall rooms (see below), a balun is needed to connect with a wired connection. These are available for checkout with a hub or switch in the Hedberg Library.

Sharing a network connection
If you and your roommate will both use a wired connection to the network or have other ethernet devices such as game consoles, you will need a hub to allow two to four devices to be on the network at the same time in the same room. We offer a hub "kit" for checkout at the Hedberg Library. The kit contains:
- One hub or switch
- One 3 or 5 ft. ethernet cable
- One balun
While there is no charge for the kit, it remains the property of Carthage and must be returned at the end of the school year. If you do not return the kit, you will be charged $35.

Routers are NOT allowed at Carthage. Please do not bring a router (wired or wireless) with you or install it in your room. If such a device is detected on the network, your room port will be disabled until the device is removed.

Items for sale
Ethernet cables in lengths between 5 and 25 feet are available for purchase at Hedberg Library or at the Carthage bookstore (Barnes & Noble). You can also bring your own.

Payment Information
If you purchase cables, you may pay in cash or by check at any time. We do accept credit card payments during the first week of the fall term during check-in.

Locations requiring baluns and hubs
If you live in one of the following locations, you will need to check out a balun and hub or switch:

  • Johnson Hall (except suites)
  • Tarble Hall (except suites)
  • South Hall

All other locations are outfitted with standard ethernet jacks. Note that blue and yellow jacks are network. Gray jacks are for telephone.
