Tips for keeping your mailbox clean
Here are a few tips to help you keep your mailbox uncluttered.
- Make sure your Trash is empty. If it isn't, click the Empty Trash button
on the Mailboxes screen.
- From the Mailboxes list, identify any mailboxes that
have the biggest size. Look through those for unwanted messages. Be sure
to check your Sent box from time to time.
- In your INBOX (or any other mailbox), sort by size to
see which messages are the biggest:
- Open your INBOX
- Click on the word "Size" at the top of the columns
that gives the message sizes. The first time you click, it
will sort with the smallest ones first.
- Click on the heading "Size" again to sort with the
largest ones first.
- Delete messages as you see fit.
- To sort back to the usual order, click on the header
"Received". If you get the oldest ones listed first, click
on "Received" again.
- Delete "duplicate" messages. Once you have sorted by
size, you will often see two or more messages with nearly
the same size where you have perhaps received a message
with an attachment and then replied or forwarded it on.
You should be able to delete all but one of those.
- File attachments to your local hard drive. If you have
a large e-mail message, it almost certainly contains an
attachment.
- Open the message
- Scroll down to the bottom to see the attachment(s)
- Right-click on the attachment icon and select "Save
Target As"
- Save it to the location you choose. I have a folder
called "Attachments" that I use specifically for this
purpose.
- Once the attachment is saved - if you don't need the
contents of the message itself - delete the message.
