Creating and Using your Carthage Personal Home Page

All Carthage users can have space on the Carthage web hosting server.  Below are instructions for using that web space.

GETTING YOUR WEB SPACE

Your web space is created automatically the first time you publish something to it.  Create your web pages on your local computer and then use the instructions below to publish.  You will need to know your Novell user name and password.

Note address of your web site should be http://personal.carthage.edu/username

where “username” is the same as your Novell user id.

PUBLISHING TO YOUR WEB SPACE

FTP is the recommended publishing method for personal.carthage.edu.  FTP will work for publishing no matter what software you use to create your pages.  If you use a web page creation program that has a built-in publish feature - such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver – you can use its Publish feature.  Special instructions for FrontPage are given below.  Dreamweaver’s Put feature with work without any special instructions.

To publish web pages using FTP

If you do not have your own FTP client, Windows users can use the instructions below.  If you have your own FTP software, omit steps 1-3 and follow your client’s instructions; just use the server name shown in step 4.

Using FTP from a Windows lab computer on the Carthage network:

1.     Login to Novell.

2.     Click Start and go to Run.

3.     Type in R:\FTP\iftp32.exe and press Enter

4.     A login window will appear.  For the host name, type in personal.carthage.edu

5.     Enter your NOVELL user id and password in the corresponding spaces.  Leave everything else the way it is*.

6.     Click OK.  You will see two panes:  the one on the left shows the active directory on your local computer; the one on the right shows the contents of your directory on the personal web server.

7.     In the left panes, navigate to the folder where your web files are.  (Use Chdir or double-click on “..” in the upper left repeatedly to go up in the hierarchy and then double-click on folder names to open the correct folders.)

8.     When your files are showing in the left pane, highlight the one(s) you want, and then click the -> button in the middle of the screen to upload them to the server.  You can select and upload whole folders from the upper left pane in the same way.  The names of the uploaded folders and files will show up in the right pane.

9.     When finished, click Exit.

* For those familiar with FTP settings, the “remote directory” field can be left blank.  When you connect, you are by default placed in the top directory of your web space

To publish web pages using web authoring tools (like Dreamweaver) that use FTP

If you are using Dreamweaver or another web authoring program that uses FTP, you can use the software’s built-in publish feature (may be called “put” or some other terminology.)  Publish to your site address – personal.carthage.edu/username.

To publish an existing web using FrontPage

If you have an existing web created on your local hard drive, you can publish it to ftp://personal.carthage.edu using FrontPage.

1.     Open FrontPage

2.     Open your local web until you see it on your screen.  Modify it if you want to.

3.     Click on File -> Publish Web

4.     Type in the address you were given (in format ftp://personal.carthage.edu/username)

5.     Click the OK button

6.     You will get a login screen.  Enter your NOVELL user id in the User name field and your Novell password in the password field.  Click on OK.

7.     Click the Show>> button to see the destination files on the server in the right-hand window.

8.     Click the Publish button.  You will get a message when the process has completed successfully.

If you created a web page on personal.carthage.edu directly using FrontPage and don’t have the files on your computer, you must first FTP them from the server to your computer using the instructions below.  You only need to do this step ONCE.

1.     Launch FrontPage

2.     Click the File menu, click New, and click Page or Web

3.     From the panel displayed at the right of the screen, in the section called New, click Empty Web

4.     Note the location in the drop down box at the right of the next window or click the Browse button to specify a location.  This will be where the web will be located on your hard drive.  Make sure you know the EXACT path.

5.     Click OK.  Your web is now created.  You may leave the program open while you do the next steps.

6.     Use FTP as shown on the previous page.  Make sure that your server web directory (personal.carthage.edu) shows in the right pane and the directory you just created above shows in the left pane.  In step 8, click the <- button to DOWNLOAD your files from the server to your newly created web.  If you have your own FTP client, follow its instructions.

7.     When your download process is complete, click back in the FrontPage window.  Click the View menu and click Refresh.  Make sure that all of the files from your web site on the server now show up in the web on your hard drive.
