Using the Mail System:
Q: How do I check my email?
A: We recommend that you use the web-based mail client. Just point your browser to http://webmail.carthage.edu. At the login screen, enter your internet mail address/user id and password. Most user ids are the user's first initial and last name (eg. jlittle) If you have a very common name, you may have a number after your name (eg. jsmith2)
If you are already familiar with another mail reader, you can use any POP3 compliant program such as Netscape Messenger, MS Outlook, or Eudora. Limited or no support is available for clients other than the web interface. Instructions are available at http://www.carthage.edu/ais/help/popmail.html
Q: How do I send messages?
A: Log in to the web mail interface and click on Compose. Send to on and off campus people using their internet mail addresses.
User ids:
Q: What is my e-mail login?
A: The webmail system uses your internet mail address as your login. Your internet mail address and email login will be the first letter of your first name followed by your last name. There may be numbers in your id also, depending on if there exists more than one person with the same login combination e.g.) John Smith becomes jsmith. If there are multiple John Smiths (or a Joe Smith, or a Jack Smith) they become jsmith1, jsmith2, etc. The login (e.g. csabbar) plus @carthage.edu will be your email address both on and off campus.
Q: Can I forget about my Banyan user id?
A: Not entirely. For the 2001-2 school year, we will continue to use Banyan for file and print services. So, you will still need to login to print and/or to access your H drive (home directory) or other network drives (ClassApps (J:), Applications (P:), etc.) So, during this year, you will have TWO SEPARATE logins: one for e-mail and one for file and printer access. They have different formats and separate passwords.
Other questions:
Q: Can I use wildcards to send messages?
A: Wildcards as we know them will no longer be available. There will be two alternatives. 1) The preferred alternative is to use listservs (mailing lists) instead. With the new software, it will be fairly easy to create new email lists that people can join voluntarily. 2) E-mail can be sent directly to groups (classes) of users (e.g. all student users). Access to this feature will be limited to only specific people. Students will not be able to send mass e-mail messages.
Q: Am I limited to a certain number of messages in my mailbox?
A: Quotas are implemented differently in Communigate Pro. Instead of a fixed number of messages, quotas will be implemented by the size of the mailbox. A user will be given a specific number of megabytes for storage of their mail/attachments on the server. All messages and attachments in all folders (called “mailboxes” in the new system) will be calculated into the total amount stored.
Q: Can I do...
A: If there is another feature you are wondering about, check out http://www.stalker.com/ and click on the Communigate Pro link. Their documentation is much more thorough than this short FAQ.
