Configuring Wireless for Use at Carthage

(Windows XP)

If you are a Carthage community member and have a Windows XP laptop with wireless capability, you can connect to the campus network and the internet at Carthage. The instructions below tell you how to configure wireless access in two distinct locations: 1) residence halls and 2) the library and all other academic buildings. If you want to use your laptop in both locations, you need know both SSIDs.

Carthage wireless access points do not broadcast their SSID. You must know the SSID for the location in which you wish to connect. Contact the Hedberg Library Information Desk at x4357 (HELP) or in person to get the necessary SSIDs.

Click on Start – Settings – Network Connection.

  1. Right-click the icon for your wireless connection.
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab. If the tab is not shown, your computer has its own proprietary wireless management utility. Contact your computer vendor to find out how to use it or turn it off.
  4. Make sure the box labeled “Use Windows to configure my wireless network setting” is checked.
  5. Click the Add button in the Preferred networks section.
  6. Enter the SSID that you got by calling the Hedberg Library Information Desk.
  7. Set Network Authentication to Open and Data encryption to Disabled. Click the OK button.
  8. Click on the Advanced button.
  9. Make sure that the "Access point (infrastucture) networks only" option is selected. Click the Close button.
  10. Click OK to finish configuration.

The new network name will now appear in the Preferred networks area but will not yet show as operational. Since Windows XP can define multiple wireless networks and will search for them in the order they are listed here, use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to put your listed networks in the order that you will use them most.
