Accessing your Carthage e-mail using a POP client

You can use Outlook, Outlook Express, Netscape, Eudora (or any other POP mail client) to read your campus e-mail. While we recommend that you use the web mail interface provided with CommuniGate Pro, but we provide the information below for those who strongly prefer to use a POP client.

A few caveats to POP mail include:

  • You can only see the contents of your General and Wastebasket folders. No other folders are visible and you cannot file messages into other folders.
  • New messages are not displayed automatically as they come in. Checking for new messages can be performed automatically at set intervals or manually when you wish, but the process can take several minutes, depending on the size of your mailbox.
  • There is no directory service to look up Carthage users' names so you must know the recipient's e-mail address when sending mail to campus users.
  • The college provides this gateway information for the benefit of any registered student, staff or faculty member. When you set up any POP/SMTP client, the college recommends you keep a copy of recent messages on the server as protection against loss of any message. If you accidentally remove the messages from the server by setting this up incorrectly, they will be gone permanently. The contents of your mailbox will NOT be restored from backup.

Your client software will ask for several pieces of information in order to be configured properly. These include:

  • Name - Enter your name in the format you would prefer that it be displayed on messages you send, e.g. Samantha Glass.
  • E-mail address - Enter your Carthage e-mail address, e.g. sglass@carthage.edu
  • Incoming mail server (POP3)- Enter pop.carthage.edu
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP) - Enter smtp.carthage.edu
  • Password - We recommend that you uncheck the "remember password" option to let the program prompt you for the password each time. If not, enter your Carthage e-mail password.
  • Make sure that the settings for Outgoing Server are set to require Authentication.
    • Click on Tools > Account Settings.
    • Open the entry you use for Carthage e-mail.Outlook setting for SMTP
    • Click on the 'More Settings' button to adjust the server settings. You will see this screen appear.
    • Click on the Outgoing Server tab.

    • Check the box 'My Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
    • Click on OK.

    • Click on the 'Test Account Settings' button to check your work. Adjust settings as needed.

Reminder:

Be careful! By default, a program like Outlook will REMOVE your messages from the mail server and transfer them to your local workstation. This may or may not be what you want to do!
