Requirements for Student Computers

If you bring a computer to Carthage, it should meet the requirements below.

Note: the Computer Center staff will NOT provide assistance with network setup to students whose computers do not meet minimum requirements. Please also note what services we do and do not provide.

Computers that have been supported in the past may no longer meet the criteria and will no longer be eligible for assistance.

Minimum Resource Requirements -

PC systems:
Windows XP or greater (any XP or Vista version)
All operating systems must be officially released software versions in ENGLISH
1GB RAM or more (2GB recommended for Vista)
Pentium, Celeron, or AMD processor - 1Ghz or better
Built-in or pre-configured Ethernet or wireless

Macintosh systems:
OS X or greater
1GB RAM or more
Intel processor
Built-in Ethernet or wireless

Brand Requirements -

    Toshiba laptops
    IBM or Lenovo computers, including Thinkpad laptops
    Compaq computers
    Hewlett Packard (NOT Packard Bell) computers
    Dell computers
    Gateway computers
    Sony computers
    Apple Macintosh computers
Content Restrictions -
Before bringing in your computer to have it worked on by staff for any reason, please be sure to do the following:
  • Remove any offensive desktop wallpaper or screensavers. Staff may refuse to work on computers that have offensive materials readily displayed on the desktop. This includes pornography and/or profanity.
  • Remove or record any power-on, Windows, or screen saver logins or passwords. You may submit them in writing with your computer or remove them completely.
  • Please note that the College does not allow the use of bandwidth-intensive software such as Kazaa, Morpheus, and AudioGalaxy. If they are found on your computer, they will be removed.
  • Make sure your computer has Symantec Anti-virus installed on it. Copies are available at no charge to all Carthage students.
