Welcome to Hedberg Library

The Hedberg Library, named after Donald D. Hedberg, a 1950 graduate of Carthage and founder of the Hedberg Foundation, opened in January 2002 and is located on the north side of the Siebert Chapel.  The Hedberg Library houses all three units of Academic Information Services - academic computing, library and media services - and seeks to support the educational program of the college and provide students and faculty with the materials they need to pursue their course assignments and research.

Services
Hedberg Library provides a variety of services to support academic inquiry and research.  The Circulation Desk checks library materials in and out of the library.  The Circulation Desk is also in charge of print and electronic course reserves, which offers assured access to supplemental course materials for faculty and students.  Reciprocal borrowing agreements with UW-Parkside and Gateway Technical College and interlibrary loan services to other libraries provide access to materials not available in the Carthage collection.  Library and computer professionals, as well as student assistants, provide reference and computer help at the Information Desk.  Reference Librarians also offer research assistance and classroom instruction in library and computer resources.

Computer Resources:
Hedberg Library has a rich collection of computer resources.  Over 500 Ethernet ports are located throughout the library for users who wish to connect their own laptop computers to the campus network.  In the Information Commons, there are 30 computers with access to the campus network and the Internet, two scanners and two laser printers.  The Saemann Curriculum Resource Center houses 12 multimedia equipped PC computers with access to the campus network and the Internet. An additional laser printer is located outside the entrance to Saemann. There also are 7 additional computers located throughout the Lower Level.

Media Resources:
Media equipment, including Panasonic video cameras, CD and audio tape players, digital cameras, slide projectors, portable projection screens data projectors and notebook computers, can be checked out from the Circulation Desk.  Media Services can also arrange access to their video production and editing facilities.

Library Collection:
The Hedberg Library collection contains over 147,000 carefully selected books, video recordings, CD-ROM, and other materials.  The library subscribes to over 400 current periodical titles.  The Technical Services department selects, orders, and processes these materials, and takes suggestions for additions and improvements to the collection.  In addition, Hedberg Library offers access to an extensive array of electronic information resources via the electronic library web pages.  These resources include a web-based library catalog, electronic indexing and abstracting services of journal literature, news and current events files, an electronic reference desk, subject guides to Internet sites, and computer access to over 15,000 unique full text journal titles.

Classrooms and Study Rooms:
In addition to the multimedia Curriculum Resource Center, the library has three media enhanced classrooms (the 75 seat Niemann Media Theater, the 35 seat Fritsch classroom, and the 24 seat Mullin classroom) containing network jacks, sound systems, and data and video projection equipment.  There are also six (6) group study rooms, for small groups of 4 - 8 persons and 12 individual study rooms.

Other Facilities:
Donna's Bytes is a 24 hour meeting and computing space, with Einstein Bros Bagels and Freshens Smoothie menu items served weekdays from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.  The Staubitz Archives is the home of special items, including photos, records, and manuscripts related to the history of Carthage.  The Brainard Writing Center is staffed by trained Writing Fellows who provide assistance for any written assignment.
