In order to locate the best material available in the most efficient manner, it is necessary to develop a basic search strategy. Reference materials -- Monographic (books) materials -- Periodicals (articles) -- Web.

Most subjects or topics can be described in two or three keywords. 

Initially, use the most specific search terms possible.

If necessary use synonyms and variant forms of a search term.

Example: ancient or classic; woman or women; greece or greek; rome or roman

Combine search terms with one or more Boolean search operators (and, or, not).

Example: persia and peloponn*; athens or sparta;

Use truncation symbols

Example: classic* retrieves citations with these words: classic, classics, classical, classically

Use nesting techniques
