Frequently Asked Questions About Off-Campus Database Access

How does EZproxy differ from the Innovative (Triple I) proxy used previously by Carthage?

EZproxy is an improved way for you to access Carthage databases:

1. no browser configuration required,

2. you search ONLY on Finding Articles and Other Information page http://www.carthage.edu/ais/library/newalljournals.htm, and

3. you login with your Carthage Webmail login name and password.

If I'm accustomed to using the old Innovative (Triple I) proxy, how do I switch over to EZproxy?

Simply delete http://library.carthage.edu:8080/proxy.pac from your browser by reversing the Innovative installation instructions.

What sort of browser do I need to use?

EZproxy is mostly browser independent, but you should be using the most current version of your favorite browser to get maximum functionality from the databases you use. Be sure you have enabled cookies and JavaScript.

How can I get more current/different versions of Microsoft Internet Explorerand Mozilla Firefox?
Use the browser now installed on your computer to access Microsoft's download site. You may prefer to download Mozilla Firefox.

Does EZproxy work with Macintosh?
Yes. Safari, the new browser supplied with OS X, tends to work well with EZproxy. You can also download and install Mozilla Firefox for Macintosh.

Does the proxy work with AOL or other proprietary browsers?

The current AOL browser does not work with EZproxy or other library proxies. Other proprietary browsers like MSN and Compuserve may not work either. To get around this, AOL and some other users need to download Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer from one of the above URLs. After installing the second browser, they connect to the Internet with the AOL browser, minimize it, and launch the new browser for database searching with EZproxy.

Can I use the proxy with free ISPs?

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) include use of an accelerator, such as NetOne, NetZero, HiSpeed, Google Accelerator, and Firefox DownThemAll, which need to be turned off before EZproxy will work. (Essentially, accelerators are using their own proxy to run things.) You can also download a second browser (see above) to make this work.

Can I access library databases from my place of employment (other than Carthage)?
Your workplace may use a firewall or another proxy server, in which case you will not be able to access the library's databases from work. We recommend that you contact your company IT department for help.

Should my computer have any special add-ons or plugins?

You will need Adobe Reader to read most database articles.

Disable pop-up blockers in your browser, and enable cookies and JavaScript.

Other databases may have additional requirements. ARTstor, for example, also requires Java v1.3 and Flash Player 6.0.
