Reserve Policy

The reserve collection in the Hedberg Library serves as a means of providing students with quick access to course related materials.  Our goal in providing this service is to support your teaching activities. We will make every effort to obtain legal copies of the resources you need and make them available to you and your students as quickly as possible.  Please be aware, however, that the reserves process takes time.

Items on reserve are organized by instructor and course number and held behind the Circulation Desk. Items may also be placed on Electronic Reserve, accessible via the online Catalog with Carthage ID.

Faculty who wish to place items on reserve fill out a faculty reserve request form, available at the library circulation desk or online from the library home page.  The form will ask for the following information:

course title and number
professor’s name
phone number
email address
item citation information
which semester the item is being placed on reserve for
how long you would like the material to be checked out for
and any special instructions

Faculty submit the reserve request form and any personal copies to the Circulation Desk. Library staff processes the requests.  Students wishing to use the materials must use their Carthage ID to check out the items at the Circulation Desk of the Hedberg Library.

Items placed on Reserve must either be owned by the Library or be purchased or legally reproduced personal copies.

If the Library does not own the item you would like to place on reserve, we will consider purchasing the item for the library collection.  A library staff member will contact you to review the available options and ascertain your wishes.  Be aware that it may take some time for the item to arrive at the library and be added to the collection.

The Library must abide by Copyright Guidelines.

The Library will NOT place materials borrowed from other libraries on Reserve.

Copyright laws generally limit the use of home-recorded, “off-air” tapes of broadcast programs to the classroom within 10 days of taping.  The library will not accept home-recorded, “off-air” tapes of broadcast programs for the reserve collection unless specific and adequate copyright permissions can be verified and arranged.  The library will work with faculty to locate and purchase commercial recordings of the program to place on reserve, when and if available.

If faculty are concerned about personal copies of commercial media being damaged, Media Services can make one copy for the reserve shelf. The original, however, must be held at the Circulation Desk while the copy is on reserve to comply with copyright laws.

To abide by copyright guidelines, all Reserve items will be taken off of Reserve at the end of each semester. If you are planning on using items from semester to semester, copyright permissions must be secured. For more information, call the Information Desk at x5950.
