Library Technical Services

Hedberg Library is committed to supporting the College mission of providing a strong foundation in the liberal arts for all its students and transmitting the human heritage in the arts, humanities and sciences.  The library also supports the College goals of fostering a love of learning, an openness to diverse ideas, a commitment to lifelong learning, the development of communication skills, and a facility for critical and constructive thinking.  In addition, the library supports the goals of preparing students to be licensed teachers, and for other careers that offer opportunities for personal satisfaction and service to society.  Last, but not least, the library supports the goal of encouraging active participation as informed and responsive citizens in seeking solutions to problems in the community, the nation, and the world.

Technical Services

Over the past decade, Technical Services has taken a leadership role in keeping abreast of technological advances.  Our catalog of printed 3x5 cards has been replaced with an online catalog accessible in the library, from student dorms, and off campus.

Library materials are now available in a wide array of formats and information options, from powerful computer databases like Access to bibliographic utilities like OCLC - a world catalog of books, software, music, and videos numbering over 45 million and increasing by over 1 million per year.  Today patrons have access to compact discs, digital video discs, computer software, microforms, audio and video cassettes, games, the internet, and electronic databases, as well as traditional print books and periodicals.

To Technical Services has fallen the task of selecting, managing, and making order of this complex set of choices available to libraries.  As users struggle to gain control of the overwhelming amount of material added daily to the web, it is obvious that catalogers, who are trained to classify, index, and categorize information, are the best qualified to mold the web into a well organized, useable form.

On this page you will find information about Technical Services: what we do, our full-time staff, our student assistants, and some of the resources we use.

Student Employment

Technical Services employs a number of students to assist with acquisitions, serials, book repair, processing, and cataloging.  This is very detailed and challenging work.  We need students who show an attention to detail, have computer skills, and for some positions, math skills.  We hire most students at the beginning of the fall term.  Occasionally, positions are available at the start of the spring term.  Contact Rick Hren at 5900 for details.
