Configuring Your Browser to Access Library Databases from Off-Campus
In order for Carthage students, faculty, and staff to access library databases from off-campus, it is necessary to configure the browser—a compatible version of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox—according to the instructions below.

In addition, your browser should accept cookies, have Java & Java Script enabled and, in Microsoft Internet Explorer, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy settings. Make these adjustments to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options or to Mozilla Firefox > Tools > Options. Many fulltext databases contain documents in .pdf format, which requires installation of Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 8 is most recent), downloadable here. Browser setup needs to be done only once.

Having problems connecting? Accessing from your place of employment? Conflict with another proxy configuration? See Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) regarding these important issues about off-campus access to library databases.

Problems have been reported withNetscape version 6 and some versions of MSIE 4.0. The library recommends more modern browser versions, which work consistently with the proxy server as well as with the databases.

Road Runner and DSL subscribers who prefer MS Internet Explorer as their browser should configure it as a Local Area Network (LAN) Connection, top right, above.

Safari has issues using a proxy with Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard), so on this OS we recommend downloading and installing a Firefox 2 browser instead. (Instructions for proxy installation on Mozilla Firefox v2 can be found above.)

AOL and other proprietary browsers cannot be used to access library databases remotely. To do so, AOL users should download, install, and configure a complete Internet Explorer or Netscape. See Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information.
