    • Determine the order in which the clips will appear in your final project
    • Now you’re ready to head for the editing suite

    • When you’re satisfied, click the “X” in the upper right-hand corner of the “Clip” Window
  • Place clips on the timeline.  (You can magnify or reduce the view of the timeline by clicking the box in the lower left-hand corner of the “Timeline” window and selecting a different scale)
    • Find the first clip you want to place in your project.  You’ll find it in the “Project” window
    • Click the picture associated with the clip and drag that clip into the “Timeline” window.  Drop the clip into the “Video 1A” slot.  When you release the mouse button, the video for the clip will drop into the “Video 1A” slot and the associated audio (if any) will drop into the “Audio 1” slot.  Clips that are audio only should be dropped into an empty Audio track.  If additional Video or Audio tracks are needed, right click within the “Timeline” window and choose “Add Video Track” or “Add Audio Track,” as appropriate.
    • Transitions between clips take two forms
      • Cuts - immediate change in the image
      • Other transitions - dissolves and other special effects when the image changes
    • To accomplish a cut to a new image, click and drag the next image into the timeline window.  Drop it into the same video slot as the previous clip and butt it up against the end of the previous clip
    • To prepare for other transitions to a new image, click and drag the next image into the “Video 1B” slot.  Make sure the two images overlap on the timeline.  The amount of overlap will determine the speed of your transition.  A range of 2 to 8 seconds overlap is suggested, depending on the effect you desire.  To complete your transition:
      • From the top menu bar, click Window>Show Transitions
      • Select the transition you wish to use in the “Transitions” window (perhaps the most professional appearing transition is the “cross dissolve”)
      • Click and drag the desired transition to the “Timeline” window, dropping it into the “Transition” line between the two overlapping clips.
      • After placing transitions, be sure to “Render” your work -- From the top line menu, click Timeline>Render Work Area
    • To insert alternate video into a main shot (e.g. crowd shots inserted into footage of a speech without disturbing the audio)
      • After dropping the main clip (including audio) into the “Video 1A” slot, click and drag the desired insert into the “Video 2” slot.  Upon replay, the video will cut to and from the inserted footage.
      • To accomplish an insert of this type with transitions other than a cut, follow the instructions above, then:
        • click on the clip you just placed in the “Video 2” slot to select it.
