2004 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients
Nancy Lyon
Nancy Lyon, '78, Chicago, Illinois, is
senior vice president of trust and financial services at
Northern Trust Company. She is an attorney and, at one time,
was an instructor at the Wilmette, Illinois, campus of Loyola
University Law School.
At Carthage, Ms. Lyon majored in business administration and
accounting, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Chi sorority. After
graduating with high honors, she attended Loyola University
Chicago's College of Law and earned her J.D. in 1981.
She received her bar admissions from the State of Illinois and
later studied estate and gift taxation at ITT Chicago-Kent
College of Law. In 1982, she served as an attorney for the
personal injury firm Corby & Demetrio. In 1983, she joined
Northern Trust, where she managed the responsibilities of
after-verdict financial settlements. In 1986, she was promoted
to senior guardian administrator and in 1991, to senior
business development officer. She again was promoted to vice
president in July 1991, and, most recently, senior vice
president. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, CBA
Trust Committee, and Illinois Trial Lawyers Association (ITLA).
She currently serves as secretary-treasurer for the Chicago Bar
Foundation.
Ms. Lyon has provided naming gifts for the women's
volleyball coach's office in the N. E. Tarble Athletic
and Recreation Center and for a faculty office in the A. W.
Clausen Center for World Business. She currently serves on
Carthage's Division of Social Sciences advisory
committee.
Patrick Anderson
Patrick Anderson, '85, Alexandria,
Virginia, founded his own law firm in 1988, and is an attorney
practicing criminal defense in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
He served as a board member and vice chairman of the Alexandria
Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA); on the board of
directors of the Hopkins House Association; as chairman of
Alexandria's Economic Opportunities Commission; and as
president of the board of trustees of the Alexandria Symphony.
Mr. Anderson currently serves on the board of directors of the
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Virginia and is active
in Democratic politics. He worked on several state and local
campaigns, and, most recently, served as General Counsel to the
Democratic Party of Virginia.
At Carthage, Mr. Anderson sang with the Carthage Choir, served
as president of Phi Alpha Theta, was a member of Lambda Kappa,
served as a Resident Assistant, and worked for the student
newspaper. He received the Nelson Peter Ross Scholarship for
Excellence in History. As an alumnus, he has volunteered as a
Class Agent, and he attends alumni events in the Washington,
D.C. area.
Mr. Anderson earned his law degree from the University of
Richmond and received his bar admission from the Commonwealth
of Virginia in 1988.
He and his wife, Kim, have two children, Sydney and Madeline.
Leroy and Edith (Tiecklemann) Botkin

Leroy, '43, and Edith (Tieckelmann,
'45) Botkin, Northbrook, Ill., are Henry Denhart
Society members, serve as College Torchbearers, and have
volunteered for a number of College activities. They attend the
annual get-together of a group of 1940s graduates that has been
gathering since the 1950s.
At Carthage, Leroy majored in mathematics and Edith majored in
elementary education. On September 22, 1943, Leroy was
commissioned as ensign in the US Navy. Later that evening, he
married Edith, his college sweetheart. After serving in the
Pacific during World War II, he enrolled at the University of
Iowa and earned his master's degree in actuarial
science in 1948. He was hired immediately by CNA Insurance in
Chicago. He was admitted as a fellow in the Society of
Actuaries in 1957. After more than 38 years and several
advancements, he retired from CNA Insurance in 1987 as vice
president of financial reports. He is a member and past
president of the Chicago Actuarial Association, and he served
for 18 years on the board of directors of the condominium where
he lives.
Before moving to Northbrook, the couple lived in LaGrange,
Illinois, where Edith was active in civic affairs. She led a
successful campaign to fluoridate the village water. Leroy
served for several years as secretary for the church council of
Grace Lutheran Church.
Today, the Botkins are active members of Lutheran Church of the
Ascension in Northfield.
Leroy and Edith have four children, Nancy, Allan, Marilyn, and
David. The couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary.
David Dale
David Dale, '43, St. Louis, Missouri,
and his wife, Estelle, recently established the Rev. J. E. and
Mary A. Dale Scholarship fund, which provides funding to
Carthage students who are children of Lutheran pastors. The
Dales also provided a naming gift for a future golf center in
Carthage's Physical Education Center and are Henry
Denhart Society members. Mr. Dale continues to coordinate
annual class reunions and has attended numerous Carthage
events.
Mr. Dale previously led the Meals on Wheels program in his
community and has been active in his church for more than five
decades. He is editor of CBIVA Sound-Off, the quarterly
magazine for the China-Burma-India Veterans Association.
Mr. Dale majored in history and English at Carthage. After
graduation, he met Estelle while attending an Army Specialized
Training Program at Rhode Island State College (now the
University of Rhode Island). He was stationed in China, Burma,
and India while serving in WW II.
He worked several jobs after the war, and later found a
meaningful career as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch, where he
retired as assistant vice president after 34 years of service.
David and Estelle have a daughter, Mary Kathleen Hanneke, and
two grandsons. They soon will celebrate their 60th wedding
anniversary.
