Each year, Carthage alumni are asked to submit their nominations
for the Distinguished Alumni Awards. After extensive
deliberations, the Alumni Council selects the recipients.
2005 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients
Hoyt Harper II
Hoyt Harper II, '77, Cohasset, Mass., will
receive a Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Harper is
senior vice president, brand management for Starwood Hotels and
Resorts, White Plains, N.Y., and a 25-year veteran of the travel
and hospitality industry.
This year, Harper was selected by Black Enterprise
magazine as one of the 75 most powerful blacks in corporate
America. He is responsible for all operational aspects of
Starwood's Four Points by Sheraton brand, including
standards, product development and owner relations.
Harper previously served as senior vice president of business
development and marketing programs for Starwood Hotels and
Resorts Worldwide; and as Starwood's vice president,
marketing. In that post, Harper oversaw the 1999 launch of
Starwood's preferred guest program, rated the
nation's best frequent-guest program by USA
Today. Prior to that, Harper was an executive with ITT
Sheraton and received the Harold S. Geneen Award, ITT
Corporation's highest achievement award for marketing, in
1992.
Harper serves on the marketing advisory committee of Suffolk
University's School of Management in Boston.
John Seal
John Seal, '72, Arlington, Va., will receive a
Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. Seal is chief management
and human capital officer of the Pension Benefit Corporation, a
self-financing government corporation that insures private
sector, deferred-benefit pension plans.
Seal served as acting executive director of ACTION, the federal
domestic volunteer agency, in 1981 and 1982, after beginning his
government career with the Office of Management and Budget. He
has also held positions with the U. S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission and the U. S. Department of Education.
At Carthage, Seal graduated summa cum laude. He has
credited Eric Olson, a professor of political science, with
reinforcing his desire to enter government service and
encouraging him to pursue graduate studies at Cornell University.
Seal earned a master's degree in public administration at
Cornell.
Seal has been named an Outstanding Young Man by the U. S.
Jaycees; is listed in Who's Who in American Politics and
Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges; and has
received several federal recognition awards, including the 2003
Meritorious Executive Award.
Dr. John Jeanmaire
Dr. John Jeanmaire, '75, Akron, Ohio,
will receive a Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He is an
anesthesiologist for Summa Health System of Akron, and an
assistant professor of anesthesiology in the Division of Clinical
Sciences at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in
Rootstown.
Dr. Jeanmaire graduated from Carthage summa cum laude.
He received his doctor of medicine from the Medical College of
Wisconsin and was awarded membership in Alpha Omega Alpha (the
honorary medical society). He did residency in anesthesiology in
Milwaukee. He has gone on to complete acupuncture training
through the University of California Los Angeles School of
Medicine and is a member of the American Association of Medical
Acupuncture.
In addition to numerous medical lectures, he also has given many
Christian witness talks at retreats and on missions.
Dr. Jeanmaire is currently a medical director for missions to
Peru through Medical Ministry International, a Christian
organization that delivers medical assistance to Third World
countries. He helps plan, organize and lead missions to Peru. His
most interesting trip was with mules at high elevation in the
southern Andes of Peru to remote "old Inca" villages.
Dr. Jeanmaire would like to thank his parents and his superb
teachers at Carthage, such as Dr. Evelyn Crump, Dr. Kenneth Hamm
and former president Alan Anderson, '50, for providing an
excellent Christian education.
