• Carthage Men's Soccer Falls to Elmhurst, 4-2, on Sunday

    The Carthage College men’s soccer team (3-7-4, 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent Elmhurst College (10-3-2, 5-0-1 CCIW), 4-2, on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 18 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage took an early, 1-0 lead on the first of two goals by Aleks Urosevic (So., Skokie, Ill./Wilmette-Loyola-Academy) at 12:59. Elmhurst tied the contest at 17:55 on a goal by Luke Froehlich, assisted by Matt Sterner. The Bluejays made it 2-1 at 37:56 on a goal by Brian McMahon, also assisted by Sterner. The Red Men tied the contest, 2-2, just before halftime on Urusevic’s second goal, assisted by Tyler Cortez, at 44:45. The Bluejays’ Keith Thurman scored what proved to be game-winning goal at 53:00, assisted by Randy Warren. Elmhurst tacked on a final goal by Jon Brehm, unassisted, two minutes later at 55:00. The Red Men play host to CCIW-opponent North Central College (7-8, 2-3 CCIW) on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in a 7 p.m. game. also at Art Keller Field.

  • No. 43 Carthage Football Falls to North Central, 63-48, on Oct. 17

    Evan Jones completes 34-of-48 for 475 yards at ElmhurstEvan Jones completes 47-of-84 for 562 yards vs. North CentralThe Carthage College football team (4-2, 1-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 43rd in the Oct. 12 “D3football.com” poll, lost to CCIW-opponent and No. 14 North Central College (5-1, 3-0 CCIW), 63-48. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.

    The two teams combined for 1,152 total offensive yards and 63 first downs.  North Central collected 571 yards, 337 rushing and 234 passing, while Carthage had 581 yards, just 19 on the ground and 562 in the air.  Evan Jones completed 47-of-84 passes for a 562 yards (all three CCIW records), six touchdowns and four interceptions.  Jeff Koeneman caught a school and Art Keller-record 15 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns, while Nick Merchut caught 12 passes for 210 yards.  Aaron Fanthorpe completed 20-of-37 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns.  Steve Hlavac caught nine passes for 117 yards.  Pat Malek rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries, while Phillip Rossberg ran for 113 yards on 17 carries.  Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 25 to take on CCIW-opponent Augustana College (Ill., 3-3, 1-2 CCIW) in a 6 p.m. game at Ericson Field.

  • No. 6 Carthage Women's Volleyball Goes 3-1 at Oct. 16-17 UW-Oshkosh Titan Tussle

    The Carthage College women’s volleyball team (21-3, 5-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked sixth in the Oct. 13 American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, went 3-1 at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 16-17 Wisconsin-Oshkosh “Titan Tussle” at the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wis.  On Friday, Oct. 16, No. 9 the University of St. Thomas (Minn., 18-5) outlasted Carthage, 3-2, before the Lady Reds swept Lakeland College (15-7), 3-0.  The Tommies’ winning set scores were 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-12, while Carthage’s winning scores over Lakeland were 25-13, 25-8 and 25-22. 

    On Saturday, Oct. 17, Carthage defeated No. 24 Eastern University (19-4), 3-1, before defeating Luther College (17-9), 3-1.  The Lady Reds’ winning set scores over Eastern were 25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 25-8, and their winning scores over the Norse were 25-21, 25-27, 25-21 and 25-19.  Carthage plays its final regular-season home match on Tuesday, Oct. 20 by entertaining CCIW-opponent Illinois Wesleyan University in a 7 p.m. match at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.

  • Carthage Women's Soccer Edged by North Central, 2-1, on Saturday

    The Carthage College women’s soccer team (5-9, 0-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to CCIW-opponent North Central College (9-5, 2-3 CCIW), 2-1, on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. All of the scoring came in the first half. The Cardinals’ Shannon Finucane scored an unassisted goal at 5:25. Carthage’s Sarah Scardamaglia (Jr. West Chicago, Ill.) knotted the score with a goal at 16:14, assisted by Kasie Jabeck. North Central scored what proved to be the game-winner at 36:40 when Brittany Jones converted a free kick. Carthage plays host to conference-opponent Elmhurst College on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in a 5 p.m. contest, also at Art Keller Field.

    The Carthage College women’s cross country team (33-26) finished 19th at the Saturday, Oct. 17 Wisconsin-Oshkosh “Brooks Invitational” at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis.  Calvin College won the 34-team event with 80 points, followed by Washington University (Mo.) second at 93, Minnesota-Duluth third at 98, DePauw University fourth at 140, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth at 182, Bethel University (Minn.) sixth at 1876, Hope College seventh at 188, the University of Chicago eighth at 211, CCIW-member North Central College ninth at 284, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10th at 292, Wisconsin-Whitewater 11th at 341, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) 12th at 352, conference-member Illinois Wesleyan University 13th at 390, Olivet Nazarene University 14th at 431, Carroll University 15th at 450, CCIW-member Elmhurst College 16th at 453, the Illinois Institute of Technology 17th at 459, Monmouth College 18th at 480 and Carthage 19th with 513 points.

    Carthage is idle on Oct. 24 and returns to action at the Saturday, Oct. 31 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Cross Country Championship at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst, Ill., beginning at Noon.

  • Carthage Men's Golf Ties for Ninth at Weather-Shortened Gustavus Adolphus Tournament

    The Carthage College men’s golf team (27-12-2) tied for ninth at place at the Sunday, Oct. 11 Gustavus Adolphus College “Twin Cities Classic” at The Links at North Fork in Ramsey, Minn.  The Gustavus Adolphus event, originally scheduled for three days and 54 holes, was shortened to a one-day tournament due to snow and cold in upper-Minnesota.  St. John’s University (Minn.) won the 20-team tournament with a 289 team score, four strokes ahead of second-place Illinois Wesleyan University at 291.  Concordia University (St. Paul) was third at 293, followed by St. Cloud State University tied for fourth with the University of St. Thomas (Minn.) at 294 each, Nebraska Wesleyan University tied for sixth with the University of Manito at 296 each, Bethel University eighth at 298, Carthage tied for ninth with Concordia College (Minn.) at 300 each, Gustavus Adolphus tied for 11th with Wartburg College at 302 each, Central College 13th at 305, Luther College 14th at 307, Macalester College tied for 15th with the Gustavus Adolphus junior varsity team at 310 each, St. Olaf College 17th at 312, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 18th at 313, Loras College 19th at 315 and Augsburg College 20th with a 320 mark.

    Carthage’s Donnie Langland (Fr., Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) tied for 11th place with a 72.  Kyle Bahnick (Fr., Inverness, Ill./Palatine-Fremd) tied for 20th at 74, Bobby O’Neill (Jr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way East) and Billy Stone (So., Libertyville, Ill.) tied for 54th at 77 each, and Ben Schroeder (Fr., Ivanhoe, Ill./Mundelein) tied for 87th place with an 80.

  • Carthage Women's Tennis Finishes Second at CCIW Championship

    The Carthage College women’s tennis team (8-4, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) finished second at the Friday-Saturday, Oct. 9-10 CCIW Women’s Tennis Championship at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.  Wheaton College (Ill.) won the title with 72 points, 17 points ahead of second-place Carthage at 55.  North Central College was third at 39, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 26, Illinois Wesleyan University fifth at 24, Elmhurst College sixth with five points and Millikin University seventh with three points.  North Park University no longer sponsors varsity women’s tennis.
     
    Carthage’s Gina Klein (Sr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South, 10-7) finished third at number-one singles, winning that playback match, 8-1, over Jenna Richardson from Augustana College (Ill.).  Beth Kaufman (Sr., Barrington, Ill., 7-3), won the number-two singles championship with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kayli Edwards from Wheaton College (Ill.).  Hollis McPeek (So., Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest, 12-5) won the number-three singles championship over Wheaton’s Jill Casserly, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-3).  Kristina Naidicz (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper/UW-Oshkosh, 9-6) lost in the number-four singles championship flight to Wheaton’s Lindsey Hallett, 6-1, 6-0.  Ashley Morgan (Sr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 9-5) lost to Wheaton’s Sara Federschmidt in the number-five singles championship round, 6-3, 6-0.  Stephanie Zundl (Fr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, 7-7) lost to Illinois Wesleyan’s Alissa Goetz, 8-5, in the playback semifinals.

    In doubles, Carthage’s Klein and McPeek (12-5) won the number-one title, 6-4, 6-2, over Wheaton’s Kayli Edwards and Elizabeth Worsowicz.  The Lady Reds’ number-two team of Kaufman and Naidicz (8-4) lost to Wheaton’s Lindsey Hallett and Kirsten Boyer in the championship flight, Wheaton winning, 6-7(2-7), 6-1, 7-5.  Carthage’s number-tandem of Morgan and Amanda Bizub (7-7) finished fourth after losing their third-place match to Emily Doemland and Brittany Reece from Augustana (Ill.), 8-2.

    In second-round singles, also on Oct. 2, Ramoni defeated Grinnell College’s Dmitry Glumox, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0; Lotz defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Kyle Halweg, 6-2, 6-4; Tyler Johnson from Gustavus Adolphus eliminated Delk, 6-0, 6-2; Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Chris Kuna eliminated Whiteside, 6-1, 6-0; and Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Kevin Fawcett eliminated Schwenke, 6-3, 6-2.

    In third-round singles on Oct. 2, Ramoni defeated Mike Lunka from St. Mary’s (Minn.), 6-1, 6-1; but Amrik Donkena from Gustavus Adolphus eliminated Lotz, 7-5, 6-1.  In the fourth round on Saturday, Oct. 3, Ramoni defeated Matt Edin from Concordia University (Minn.), 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.  In the Oct. 3 quarterfinals, Ramoni defeated Dubuque University’s Nick Garcia, 6-2, 6-3.  Ramoni advanced to a Sunday, Oct. 4 semifinal match against Kenyon College’s Mike Greenberg, with Greenberg winning, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

Illinois Wesleyan University won its eighth-consecutive title with a 338-327-665 team score, seven strokes ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 336-336-772. Millikin University was third at 363-358-721, followed by North Central College fourth at 364-361-725, Carthage fifth at 364-363-727, Elmhurst College sixth at 366-367-743, Augustana College (Ill.) seventh at 395-285-780 and North Park University eighth with only a partial squad.

    Illinois Wesleyan University’s Lindsey Haines took medalist honors with a 79-77-156.  Millikin University’s Brittany Holmes was second at 85-78-163.  Carthage’s Amy Binstein (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South, team-leading 87.2 season average) finished 13th at 87-90-177, Heidi Hoffman (Jr., Appleton, Wis./North, 91.3) 18th at 89-92-181, Tabby Bell (Fr., Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic, 90.4) 22nd at 93-94-187, Katie Ramirez (Jr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale-South, 89.9) at 100-88-188 tied for 23rd with teammate Julie Klawitter (Fr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey, 93.8) at 95-93-188, and Taylor McAdams (Fr., Sycamore, Ill., 93.9) finished 40th at 111-98-209.

  • I Love St. Peter, Minn.; Part 29

    St._PeterCarthage College tennis coach Brady Lindsley made his 29th career trip to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., on Oct. 2-4, 2009 for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Men’s Tournament.  Lindsley has made 16 trips with the Carthage men’s tennis team, including 11 Rolex/Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournaments and five NCAA appearances.  He has made 10 other trips to Gustavus Adolphus with the women’s tennis team, including seven Rolex/ITA tournaments and three NCAA appearances.  In addition, Lindsley made the trip three times as a Carthage player between 1992 and 1995.  At 408 miles one way, or 816 round-trip miles, Lindsley has covered 23,664 miles in those 28 trips.  The circumference of Earth is approximately 24,900 miles.

On Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2009, Rothenbaum showed his teammates and a certain Wheaton College swimmer a generosity of spirit that garnered Rothenbaum the 2008-09 NCAA Division III Sportsmanship Award.
