The Carthage College baseball team (35-8, 17-4 CCIW), ranked 10th in the May 13 “D3baseball.com” poll, received an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship, and the Red Men were shipped to the Midwest Regional Championship at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh, Wis. Third-seeded Carthage joins top-seeded and No. 9 the University of St. Thomas (31-7), second-seeded and No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater (35-8), fourth–seeded and No. 16 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (29-9), fifth-seeded and No. 22 the College of St. Scholastica (32-4) and sixth-seeded Knox College (15-23). The regional championship gets underway on Wednesday, May 14. This is Carthage’s 15th NCAA regional appearance but its first at the Midwest Regional since 1992. This year’s event is co-hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission. Wollberg is tied for 29th place after day one with a 76.

Wheaton College (Ill.) was third at 305-305-317-317-1244, followed by Millikin University fourth at 303-298-332-321-1254, North Central College fifth at 326-308-331-324-1289, Elmhurst College sixth at 319-326-334-322-1301, North Park University seventh at 312-318-336-337-1303 and Augustana College (Ill.) eighth at 324-317-356-334-1331.

Carthage, this year’s CCIW champion, received a Pool B berth, since the CCIW does not have an automatic qualifier to the championship. Conferences are required to have at least seven teams playing a sport in order to receive an automatic qualifier. Only six CCIW teams sponsor men’s tennis, with both Millikin University and North Park University dropping their programs after the 2003 season. This was Carthage’s sixth-straight NCAA regional appearance.

Wheaton College (Ill.), in 25th place, is the highest-ranked College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin team in the standings. North Central College was ranked 28th, Illinois Wesleyan University 42nd, Carthage 43rd and Augustana College (Ill.) 62nd. The Carthage’ women’s volleyball team won two NCAA matches before bowing out in the regional finals. The Lady Reds’ women’s soccer team won a first-round game, the men's soccer team lost in the first round, the women's swimming team finished 27th, and the men's swimming team tied for 32nd place.
