Luke Payette begins his fourth year as head coach for the Carthage women’s water polo team in 2009 (39-41, 3 years) after coaching the Lady Reds club team in 2005. A native of Naperville, Ill., Payette received his bachelor’s in physical education and health from North Central College in 1998 and his master’s in education from Benedictine University (Ill.) in 2002. He taught in the Indian Prairie School District in Naperville, Ill., from 1998 to 2003, while coaching both swimming and water polo at Neuqua Valley High School. From 2003 to 2007, Payette taught at Highland Park High School in Highland Park, Ill., while coaching both swimming and water polo and serving as that school’s aquatic director. He is currently teaching in Carthage’s department of exercise and sport science.
Payette has developed several youth programs, including the Western Suburban Water Polo Club. He serves as vice president of the Illinois Water Polo Association. Payette is also the women’s coach for the USA Midwest Zone and was selected to help coach the 2005 and 2006 USA Water Polo national team in selected competitions. He was named USA Water Polo Midwest Elite Women’s Coach of the Year in both 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well as USA Water Polo Development Coach of the Year in 2006.
