2008 Spring Sports
Baseball
The Carthage College baseball team (36-10, 17-4 CCIW), ranked 10th in the May 13 “D3baseball.com” poll, was eliminated from the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship on May 16 with a 9-4 loss to No. 22 the College of St. Scholastica (34-5) at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh, Wis. Earlier on May 16, No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater (38-8) won the battle of the undefeated teams with a 4-1 win over No. 9 St. Thomas (Minn., 33-8). Following its win over Carthage on Friday, St. Scholastica (35-5) eliminated St. Thomas (Minn., 33-9) by a 7-1 margin. Wisconsin-Whitewater (39-8) won the May 17 championship game over St. Scholastica (35-6), 21-13. On May 15, Carthage lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater (37-8), 24-3; St. Scholastica eliminated Knox College (15-25), 15-7; and St. Thomas (Minn.) eliminated No. 16 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (29-11), 3-1. In first-round games on May 14, Carthage defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 6-3; St. Thomas (Minn.) pounded Knox, 15-1; and Wisconsin-Whitewater defeated St. Scholastica by a 7-4 margin.
In the Red Men’s loss to St. Scholastica, the Saints took a 3-0 lead in the first inning off Carthage starting pitcher Mario Perez, thanks to a two-out, two-run home run by Darrin Carlson. St. Scholastica put the next two runners on, and Joey Link delivered an RBI-single for the third run. The score stayed right there until the fourth when the Saints scored twice to take a 5-0 lead. Mike Lewis singled in the first run of the inning, and Steve Gerten followed with an RBI-double. Corey Richardson took over for Perez in the bottom of fifth. Perez (7-1) allowed five runs on 11 hits, nine of those singles, and two walks over four innings. St. Scholastica scored an unearned run in the fifth when Red Men leftfielder David Hermes misjudged a fly ball off the bat of Steve Kraushaar, allowing Kyle Wojtysiak to score all the way from first. Sean Claugherty followed with an RBI-double to score Kraushaar from second for a 7-0 margin.
The Red Men finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth on a pinch-hit, two-run homer by Will Hodges to make it a 7-2 game. Grant Eller’s solo homer in the seventh upped the Saints’ lead to 8-2, and Gerten’s RBI-single in the eight made it 9-2. Carthage made a little noise in the ninth, as Seth Romano singled in two runs to cut the lead to 9-4, but Steve Coughlin hit into a game-ending double play. Adian Kummet (8-2) was the winning pitcher for St. Scholastica. Kummet went the distance and allowed four runs, three earned, on 11 hits and three walks.
Softball
The Carthage College softball team (19-11, 9-5 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out its 2008 schedule May 5 by splitting a doubleheader with non-conference opponent Judson University (Ill., 24-24) at the Elgin Sports Complex in Elgin, Ill. Carthage won the first game, 9-7 in eight innings, before falling in the nightcap by an 11-3 margin.
Carthage was eliminated from the CCIW Softball Tournament on May 3 with a 5-3 semifinal loss to Augustana College (Ill., 26-17) at the Illinois Wesleyan University Softball Field in Bloomington, Ill. The Lady Reds won an elimination game on May 2 with a 5-0 shutout of conference-champion, top-seeded and No. 23 Illinois Wesleyan (29-9). Earlier in the day, Carthage lost to North Central College, 2-1, in eight innings. Illinois Wesleyan lost to Augustana College (Ill.), 4-2, in the other first-round contest. North Central then defeated Augustana (Ill.), 9-8, in the winner’s bracket game on May 2. Augustana (Ill.) advanced to the May 3 championship round against North Central, but the Cardinals (29-10) outlasted the Vikings (26-18), 11-10 in eight innings, to win the tournament and the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship.
Men’s Golf
The Carthage College men’s golf team (79-19) finished second at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men’s Golf Championship. The first two rounds were played on April 18-19 at the Bolingbrook Golf Course in Bolingbrook, Ill. Rounds three and four were played on May 2-3 at the Cantigny Golf Course in Wheaton, Ill. Illinois Wesleyan won its 11th league championship with a 294-296-312-307-1209 team score, 17 strokes ahead of second-place Carthage at 304-287-319-316-1226. Wheaton College (Ill.) was third at 305-305-317-317-1244, followed by Millikin University fourth at 303-298-332-321-1254, North Central College fifth at 326-308-331-324-1289, Elmhurst College sixth at 319-326-334-322-1301, North Park University seventh at 312-318-336-337-1303 and Augustana College (Ill.) eighth at 324-317-356-334-1331.
Illinois Wesleyan University’s Chris Green at 72-74-73-75-294 shared the lead with Carthage’s Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill., team-leading 73.3 season average) at 74-69-75-76-294, but Green won a four-hole, sudden-death playoff to claim medalist honors. Wollberg earned All-CCIW honors, along with teammate Matt Carr (Jr., Galesburg, Ill., 76.9), who finished fifth at 74-70-81-78-303. Dave Mikolaitis (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic, 80.3) was 13th at 78-74-82-81-315, Anthony Milano (So., Geneva, Ill., 80.1) tied for 14th at 78-74-83-81-316, and Tim Gannon (Jr., Darien, Ill./Lombard-Montini, 78.5) finished 19th with an 80-76-81-82-319.
While Carthage missed out on winning the CCIW’s automatic team qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship, Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill., team-leading 73.3 season average) was selected to play as an individual. Wollberg was one of five individuals selected to play at the May 13-16 championship at the Chateau Elon Resort in Braselton, Ga. This year’s event was co-hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission. Wollberg finished in a four-way tie for 15th place with a 76-73-77-74-300, 15 strokes behind the leader, St. John Fisher’s Scott Harris Jr., at 68-71-71-75-285. With his top-15 finish, Wollberg earned Golf Coaches Association of America/PING second-team All-American honors.
Men’s Tennis
The Carthage College men’s tennis team (14-9, 4-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Luther College (30-9), 5-1, on May 2 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Carthage, this year’s CCIW champion, received a Pool B berth, since the CCIW does not have an automatic qualifier to the championship. Conferences are required to have at least seven teams playing a sport in order to receive an automatic qualifier. Only six CCIW teams sponsor men’s tennis, with both Millikin University and North Park University dropping their programs after the 2003 season. This was Carthage’s sixth-straight NCAA regional appearance. The Red Men’s Miguel Yunes (Sr., Villahermosa, Tabasco, Mexico) was selected to play in the NCAA Division III Singles/Doubles Championship at the Wallach Tennis Center in Lewiston, Maine. Yunes (21-6) lost his first-round match on May 16 to Bowdoin College’s Steve Sullivan (24-10), Sullivan winning, 6-1, 6-2. Bates College was the host school for this year’s event.
Second-seeded Carthage won CCIW Men’s Tennis Championship on April 26 by edging top-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 14-6, 5-0 CCIW), 5-4, in the title match at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. The league championship was the sixth for the Red Men and their fifth in a row. Carthage, with a first-round bye, won its April 25 semifinal match, 7-2, over third-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 19-8, 3-2 CCIW), while Augustana (Ill.) was a 9-0 winner over sixth-seeded North Central College (2-6, 0-5) on April 25 in first-round action. Wheaton (Ill.) also had a bye, and the Thunder shut out fourth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (7-14, 2-3), 9-0, on Friday night in the other semifinal contest. Illinois Wesleyan was an 8-1 winner over fifth-seeded Elmhurst College (4-14, 1-4) in the first round on Friday. Carthage’s win over Wheaton (Ill.) in the title match was also the 200th career victory for Red Men head coach Brady Lindsley (200-74, 11 years).

Jack Schiro (So., Shorewood, Wis., 20-7) defeated the Thunder’s Justin Miller, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, at number-two singles. Sergio Lopez (Jr., Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, 19-7) defeated Davis Moore, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at number-three singles. J.T. Delk (So., Wheaton, Ill./North, 14-13) lost to Ian Kirchner number-four singles, Kirchner winning, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Andy Schwenke (So., Mukwonago, Wis., 8-17) lost to David Warren at number-five singles, Warren winning, 6-1, 6-3. Joey Perkins (Jr., Freeport, Ill., 5-12) lost to Jordan Williams at number-six singles, Williams winning, 6-0, 6-0. The Red Men’s number-one doubles team of Yunes and Lopez (22-4), ranked ninth in the April 15 ITA Central Regional rankings, was a winner over the Thunder’s Josh Williams/Justin Miller, 8-2. Schiro/Delk (12-12) defeated Moore/Kevin Graham, 8-2, with Schwenke/Perkins (5-9) losing to Jordan Williams/Warren by an 8-1 margin.
Women’s Tennis
The Carthage College women’s tennis team (11-12, 5-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), seeded second, lost to top-seeded and No. 22 Wheaton College (Ill., 21-3), 8-1, on April 26 in the title match of the CCIW Women’s Tennis Automatic Qualifying Tournament at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. With the win, the Thunder received the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship. Carthage won its April 25 semifinal match with a 9-0 win over third-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 13-10). Wheaton College (Ill.) blanked fourth-seeded North Central College (10-8), 9-0 in the other semifinal contest.
Carthage’s Gina Klein (So., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale-South, 11-14) lost to Jordan Hook from Wheaton College (Ill.) at number-one singles on April 26 in the title match of the CCIW Women’s Tennis Automatic Qualifying Tournament, Hook winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Beth Kaufman (So., Barrington, Ill., 19-9) lost to the Thunder’s Shannon Hale at number-two singles, Hale winning, 6-1, 6-2. Taylor Gustafson (Jr., Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield, 18-11) defeated Brooke Parrish at number-three singles, 6-3, 6-7(10-8), 10-5. Katie Hornick (Fr., Appleton, Wis./Kimberly, 14-11) lost to Brittney Dunn at number-four singles, Dunn winning, 6-2, 6-0. Ashley Morgan (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area, 10-14) fell to Sara Federschmidt at number-five singles, Federschmidt winning, 6-2, 6-1, and Kristina Roglin (Fr., Downers Grove, Ill./South, 8-8) lost to Kayli Edwards at number-six singles, Edwards winning, 6-0, 6-1. Carthage’s number-one doubles team of Klein and Gustafson (20-6) lost to Hook/Federschmidt, 8-1. The Lady Reds number-two team of Kaufman/Hornick fell to Hale/Parrish, 8-4, and the number-three tandem of Morgan/Roglin lost to Dunn/Edwards by an 8-3 margin.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
The Carthage College men’s track and field team (51-22 outdoor record) finished third at the May 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track & Field Championship at North Park University’s Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago. Augustana College (Ill.) won its 15th league championship with 238.50 points, followed by North Central College second at 218, Carthage third at 123.50, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 89, Wheaton College (Ill.) fifth at 76, Millikin University sixth at 30, North Park University seventh at 25 and Elmhurst College eighth with 17 points. Carthage collected first-place finishes from Tylor Lewis in the 800-meter run (1:56.11), Buzzy Brown in the long jump (23-4), Prentis Wilbourn in the triple jump (45-10 ¾) and Kenton Rauwerdink in the decathlon (6,104 points). Shaun Jozwiak was second in the discus (144-3) and third in the shot put (48-10 ½). Jon Kochmit finished second in the hammer throw (167-3 ½), as did Spencer Williams in the shot put (49-6 ½). Michael White was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:21.99), as was Nate Hughes in the javelin (180-1 ½).
Carthage had two qualifiers for the May 22-24 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wis. Michael White (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:23.90), while Buzzy Brown (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) did not reach the finals in the long jump.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
The Carthage College women’s track and field team (43-16) outdoor record) finished fifth at the Friday-Saturday, May 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track & Field Championship at North Park University’s Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago. Augustana College (Ill.) won its 12th league championship with 171 points, three points ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 168 and six points ahead of third-place Illinois Wesleyan University at 165. North Central College was fourth at 137.50, followed by Carthage fifth at 129.50, Millikin University sixth at 22, Elmhurst College seventh at 13 and North Park University eighth with nine points. Carthage’s Heather Gilmore finished second in both the 100-meter high hurdles (14.76) and the long jump (17-7 ¾). Hailey Webb took second place in the hammer throw (136-3 ¾), as did Ashley Grahovec in the heptathlon (3,863 points). Julie Rendino was third in both the hammer throw (136-3 ¾) and the javelin (120-7 ¾). Stephanie Moy finished third in the high jump (4-11 ½) and fourth in the pole vault (10-10 ¼). Mindy Harrington finished third in the discus (136-6 ¼), and Ashura Jenkins was fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.84).
Carthage’s Heather Gilmore (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa-Pleasant Hill-Southeast Polk) qualified for the May 22-24 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 100-meter high hurdles at Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wis.. Gilmore did not qualify for the finals.
Men’s Volleyball
The Carthage College men’s volleyball team (18-15, 4-0 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), ranked ninth in the final, regular-season American Volleyball Coaches Association/College Sports Television NCAA Division III poll, closed out its 2008 season on April 5 by winning the Midwest-III Volleyball Conference Tournament at the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Kern Center with a 3-0 decision over MSOE (8-20). The top-seeded Red Men’s winning game scores over the second-seeded Raiders were 30-21, 30-24 and 30-24. Earlier in the day, MSOE defeated third-seeded Fontbonne University (2-18), 3-0, in the semifinals. MSOE’s winning game scores over Fontbonne were 30-16, 30-19 and 30-15. MSOE played host to the event due to construction of Carthage’s Tarble Arena.
Women’s Water Polo
The Carthage College women’s water polo team (24-10) finished sixth at the May 2-4 Collegiate Division III Water Polo Tournament at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium in New London, Conn. Carthage lost to Grove City College, 8-6, in the Sunday, May 4 fifth-place match. The Lady Reds went 2-2 in pool play. On May 2, Carthage fell to California-Santa Cruz. 13-4, before losing to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College by a 14-7 margin. In the UC-Santa Cruz match, the Lady Reds collected single goals from Amanda Croix (Fr., Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais, 11 season goals), Patti Blatter (So, Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling, 41 goals), Kimmy Genian (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park, team-leading 75 goals) and Rose Schiavone (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect, 65 goals). In the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps contest, Genian scored three times, Schiavone twice and Jessica Shopiro (Sr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson, 45 goals) twice. On May 3, the Lady Reds defeated Connecticut College, 8-6, before edging Colorado College, 7-6. In the Connecticut College contest, Genian scored three goals, with two apiece from Schiavone and Shopiro. In the Colorado College match, Genian scored four times, Shopiro twice and Anna Kordek (Fr., Long Grove, Ill./Lincolnshire-Stevenson, 8 goals) once. In the fifth-place match against Grove City, the Lady Reds collected two goals each from Blatter, Michelle Mulhall (So., Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg, 37 goals) and one each from Schiavone and Croix. Both Genian and Schiavone were named second-team all-tournament.
Carthage won the April 18-19 Midwest Regional Water Polo Tournament with an 8-7 decision over Colorado College in the April 19 championship match at Colorado College’s Schlessman Natatorium. Earlier on April 19, Carthage defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 12-3, in the semifinals. On April 18 in pool play, the Lady Reds defeated Macalester College, 8-6; defeated Wheaton College (Ill.), 18-14; and edged Colorado College, 11-10. Carthage’s Rose Schiavone (Sr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was named the regional MVP. Patti Blatter (So., Prospect Heights, Ill./Wheeling) joined Schiavone on the regional first team, while Kimmy Genian (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) was named honorable mention all-regional. With the regional championship, the Lady Reds qualified for the Friday-Sunday, May 2-4 Collegiate Division III Tournament at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott Natatorium. In Carthage’s win over Colorado College in the regional title match, Rose Schiavone scored with 58 seconds reaming to break a 7-7 tie. Heather Croix collected her 11th blocked shot when she stopped an attempt by Kat McIntosh with five seconds on the clock.
2007-08 Winter Sports
Men’s Basketball
The Carthage College men’s basketball team (13-12, 7-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out is 2008 season on Feb. 23 with a 90-68 win over Millikin University (9-16, 2-12 CCW) at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Millikin contest was the final Carthage men’s basketball game at the Carthage Physical Education Center. The facility will be replaced by the Tarble Arena, with preliminary construction work already underway. The Carthage PEC opened with a varsity-alumni game on Dec. 4, 1965, with the first varsity contest taking place on Dec. 6, 1965 versus Aurora University. The Tarble Arena is expected to ready for the start of CCIW games in January 2009. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their November and December games on the road.
Women’s Basketball
The Carthage College women’s basketball team (18-8, 10-4 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Millikin University (20-6, 11-3 CCIW), 49-48, on Feb. 29 in the semifinals of the CCIW Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Illinois Wesleyan University Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. In the first semifinal contest, conference-champion, top-seeded and No. 9 Illinois Wesleyan (24-2) defeated fourth-seeded Elmhurst College (12-14), 78-57. Elmhurst had a one-point lead over Illinois Wesleyan at halftime, 35-34, and trailed by one, 45-44, at 14:38 second period. The CCIW champion plays host to the conference tournament, which is used to select the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. Illinois Wesleyan (25-2) defeated Millikin (20-7), 75-64, for the tournament championship on March 1.
Men’s Swimming
The Carthage College men’s swimming team tied for 32nd place at the March 20-22 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming Championship. The College of Wooster was the host school for this year’s championship, which was conducted at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio. Kenyon College won the title with 635 points, followed by Johns Hopkins University second at 330, Denison University third at 314.50, Emory University fourth at 261 and Williams College fifth with 211 points.
Carthage’s Stephen Schranck (Jr., Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) finished ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:03.34), 13th in the 400 individual medley (4:05.28) and 24th in the 100 breaststroke. Bryce Davis (Jr., Mequon, Wis./Homestead) finished 24th in the 100 butterfly (50.82), 33rd in the 50 freestyle (21.36) and 39th in the 100 freestyle (47.16), while Kyle Drake (Fr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) finished 16th in the 200 backstroke (1:52.62), 18th in the 400 individual medley (4:07.05) and 25th in the 100 backstroke (52.88). Schrank and Drake both earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America honorable mention All-America honors, Schrank in both the 200 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley and Drake in the 200 backstroke.
Carthage (8-4 dual-meet record) won its second College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship in three years and second overall on Feb. 14-16 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men won the seven-team championship with 1,025 points, followed by Wheaton College (Ill.) second at 742, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology third at 521.50, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 365.50, Millikin University fifth at 232.50, Augustana College (Ill.) sixth at 154.50 and North Central College seventh with 101 points.
Carthage’s Bryce Davis was named the CCIW “Most Valuable Swimmer” for winning three individual events and being part of three first-place relay teams. Davis won the 50 freestyle (20.89), the 100 freestyle (45.95) and the 100 butterfly (50:31) and was part of conference-champion relay teams in the 200 freestyle, the 200 medley and the 400 medley. Carthage had three other swimmers win three events each. Paul Busse took first place in the 200 freestyle (1:43.24), the 500 freestyle (4:38.50) and the 1,650 freestyle (16:08.66). Kyle Drake won the 100 backstroke (53.07), the 200 backstroke (1:52.42) and the 400 individual medley (4:08.97). Stephen Schranck took first place in the 100 breaststroke (57.55), the 200 breaststroke (2:06.21) and the 200 individual medley (1:55.36).
Andy Bax was second in the 50 freestyle (21.18), as was Bob Pellican in the 200 backstroke (1:58.49). Nathan Ripley was third in both the 100 freestyle (47.67) and the 200 freestyle (1:44.95). Chris Varner finished third in both the 100 backstroke (54.10) and the 200 backstroke (1:58.60). Bryan Pelka took third place in the 1,650 freestyle (16:23.56). The Red Men also picked up wins from Bryce Davis, Blake Bendix, Nathan Ripley and Andy Bax in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, their 800 freestyle relay team of Ripley, Schranck, Drake and Busse and their 400 medley relay squad of Varner, Schranck, Davis and Ripley.
Women’s Swimming
The Carthage College women’s swimming team finished 27th at the March 13-15 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming Championship. The College of Wooster was the host school for this year’s championship, which was being conducted at Miami University’s Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio. Kenyon College won the championship with 566.50 points, followed by Amherst College second at 341, Denison University third at 328, Emory University fourth with 288 and Williams College fifth with 269.50 points.
Five Lady Reds swimmers represented Carthage. On March 13, Carthage’s Amanda Croix (Fr., Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) finished seventh in the 50 freestyle and earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-America honors. Croix is Carthage’s first-ever CSCAA women’s All-American. Michelle Pelka (Fr., Elgin, Ill./Elgin Academy) qualified in the 200 individual medley but did not reach the finals. The Lady Reds’ 200 freestyle relay team of Sarah Reynertson (Jr., Itasca, Ill./Roselle-Lake Park), Alyssa Messina (So., Medinah, Ill./Roselle-Lake Park), Carolyn Kelly (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Central) and Croix finished 13th (1:38.36) and earned CSCAA honorable mention All-American honors, while the 400 medley relay squad of Reynertson, Pelka, Kelly and Messina did not reach the finals. On March 14, Croix finished 12th in the 200 freestyle (1:54.10), while Pelka finished 18th in the 400 individual medley (4:37.12). The 200 medley team of Reynertson, Kelly, Pelka and Croix finished 19th (1:53.80). On March 15, Croix finished ninth in the 100 freestyle (51.63), earning CSCAA honorable mention All-America honors, while Pelka finished 17th in the 200 butterfly. Carthage’s 800 freestyle relay team of Reynertson, Kelly, Pelka and Croix finished 16th (3:39.07).
The Carthage women’s swimming team (5-3 dual-meet record) finished second at the Feb. 14-16 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. Wheaton College (Ill.) won its 16th league championship and 11th in a row with 976.50 points, followed by Carthage second at 798.50, Illinois Wesleyan University third at 348.50, Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 299, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology fifth at 280, Millikin University sixth at 263 and North Central College seventh with 152.50 points.
Carthage’s Michelle Pelka was named the CCIW “Most Valuable Swimmer” for winning three events. Pelka took first place in the 200 butterfly (2:08.48), the 200 individual medley (2:10.24) and the 400 individual medley (4:30.94). Amanda Croix won both the 50 freestyle (23.77) and the 200 freestyle (1:54.48), while taking second place in the 100 freestyle (52.29). Carolyn Kelly won the 100 butterfly (1:01.34). Sarah Reynertson finished third in both the 50 freestyle (24.64) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.01). The Lady Reds also picked up a win from their 200 medley relay team of Reynertson, Amy Mueller, Pelka and Croix (1:49.77). Carthage’s Sue Nutty was named CCIW “Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year” for the fifth time.
Men’s Indoor Track and Field
The Carthage College men’s track and field team had one qualifier for the March 14-15 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship at Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio. The Red Men’s Buzzy Brown (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) qualified in the long jump (23-2 ¼, ranked 11th nationally), but his leap of 23-1 ¾ on Friday, March 14 did not place him in the top-nine scorers.
Carthage (51-28) finished fourth at the March 1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis. North Central College won its eighth-straight indoor league title with 220 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 141.50, Illinois Wesleyan University third at 91, Carthage fourth at 90, Wheaton College (Ill.) fifth at 56.50, Millikin University sixth at 31, Elmhurst College seventh at 20 and North Park University eighth with 12 points.
Carthage’s Buzzy Brown won the long jump (23-0 ¾), while finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.85). Tylor Lewis won the 800-meter run (TARC-record 1:55.30). Seth Kuttruff finished second in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.16), as did Prentis Wilbourn in the triple jump (43-7 ½) and Shaun Jozwiak in the shot put (47-0 ½) . Justin Sebens finished fifth in the high jump (6-1 ¼). The Red Men played host to the Carthage “Gill Athletics Last Chance Invitational” on Friday, March 7 at the TARC. No team scores were kept. Carthage’s Robbie Harsted won the pole vault (13-11 ¾), with Chas Walton finishing second in the event (13-0). Buzzy Brown finished second in the long jump (23-2 ¼), as did Prentis Wilbourn in the triple jump (44-9 ½). Red Men part-time assistant coach Lamont Dagan, competing as an individual, shattered the TARC record in the triple jump with a 53-9 ¼ leap, breaking his own mark of 51-4 set on Jan. 12, 2008. Carthage sent a partial squad to the Saturday, March 8 Wisconsin-Stevens Point “Pointer Last Chance Invitational” at the Multi-Activity Center in Stevens Point, Wis. The Red Men’s Joel Brunner finished fifth in the one-mile run (4:28.23) at Wisconsin-Stevens Point, while Tylor Lewis took seventh place in the 800-meter run (1:58.02).
Women’s Indoor Track and Field
The Carthage College women’s track and field team (58-22) finished fifth at the March 1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis. Illinois Wesleyan University won first-ever indoor title with 187.50 points, followed by North Central College second at 160, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 134, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 63, Carthage fifth at 60, Millikin University sixth at 38.50, Elmhurst College seventh at 10 and North Park University eighth with seven points.
Carthage’s Karen Jackson won the 5,000-meter run (18:29.54). Stephanie Moy finished fourth in the pole vault (10-10), as did Shacuána Gaines in the triple jump (35-2 ½) and Hailey Webb in the weight throw (45-6). Ashley Johnson finished fifth in the 800-meter run (2:22.44). The Lady Reds played host to the Carthage “Gill Athletics Last Chance Invitational” on Friday, March 7 at the TARC. No team scores were kept. Carthage’s Shacuána Gaines finished second in the triple jump and tied Jamie Fluker’s 2000 school record with an NCAA-provisional mark of 36-9 ½.
2007 Fall Sports
Football
The Carthage College football team (7-3, 4-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked 41st in the Nov. 5 “D3football.com” poll, concluded its 2007 season on Nov. 10 with a 56-10 loss to CCIW-opponent and No. 25 North Central College (8-2, 6-1 CCIW) at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. Trouble started early for the Red Men, as the Cardinals blocked a Matt Denny field-goal attempt at 10:32 first quarter, and Derek Sulo returned the loose ball 61 yards for a touchdown. Denny connected on a 23-yard field goal at 5:32 to make it 7-3. North Central went up, 14-3, at 1:31 first period on a one-yard pass from Aaron Fanthorpe to Matt Wenger. On the ensuing kickoff, Carthage’s Aaron Miller fumbled at his own 20-yard line, and one play later, Fanthorpe hooked up with Joe Mastrino on a 20-yard touchdown pass and a 21-3 lead at 1:14 first period.
Women’s Volleyball
The Carthage College women’s volleyball team (33-5, 7-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), ranked sixth in the final, regular season American Volleyball Coaches Association/CSTV NCAA Division III poll, lost to No. 7 Washington University (Mo., 30-5), 3-1, on Nov. 10 in the championship match of the NCAA Division III Regional Championship at the Carthage Physical Education in Kenosha, Wis. The Bears’ winning game scores over the Lady Reds were 28-30, 30-27, 30-16 and 30-20.
Carthage swept Calvin College (30-5), 3-0, on Nov. 9 semifinals. The Lady Reds’ winning games scores over the Knights were 30-26, 30-23 and 30-7. No. 7 Washington (Mo., 29-5) outlasted No. 14 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (32-6), 3-2, in the other semifinal, with the Bears winning, 27-30, 30-26, 28-30, 30-24 and 15-9. In the Nov. 8 quarterfinals, Carthage swept Carroll College (Wis., 20-14), 3-0, with the Lady Reds winning 30-21, 30-11 and 30-17. Three other quarterfinal matches were played on Nov. 8. No. 7 Washington University (Mo., 28-5) swept Hanover College (23-11), 3-0, with No. 14 Wisconsin-Oshkosh (32-5) outlasting Wisconsin-Platteville (24-13), 3-2, and No. 15 Calvin College (30-4) defeating No. 18 Wisconsin-La Crosse (24-1), 3-1. Washington’s winning game scores over Hanover were 30-19, 30-22 and 30-23; Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s game-winning scores over Wisconsin-Platteville were 26-30, 30-22, 30-32, 30-26 and 15-13; and Calvin’s winning game scores over Wisconsin-La Crosse were 26-30, 30-26, 30-20 and 30-15.
Carthage was the host team for the Nov. 2-3 CCIW Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage won the tournament, along with the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women’s Volleyball Championship with a 3-0 sweep of Augustana College (Ill., 22-13) on Nov. 3. Carthage’s winning game scores over Augustana (Ill.) were 30-26, 30-20 and 30-18.
In semifinal action on Nov. 2, Carthage defeated Illinois Wesleyan University (20-17), 3-1. The Lady Reds’ winning game scores over the Titans were 30-18, 22-30, 30-18 and 30-26. In Friday’s first semifinal match, Augustana College (Ill., 22-12) defeated Wheaton College (Ill., 25-9), 3-1. Augustana’s winning game scores over Wheaton were 29-31, 33-31, 30-25 and 37-35. Carthage’s Kelly Bauer was named tournament MVP, while teammates Jori Simmons and Rachel Swoboda were named to the all-tournament team, along with Jamie Spolum and Mallory Thelander from Augustana (Ill.), Jenna Passananti from Illinois Wesleyan and Annie Himmelhaver from Wheaton (Ill.).
Carthage defeated North Park University (13-22, 0-7 CCIW), 3-0, on Oct. 30 in a play-in match for the CCIW Women’s Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Reds’ winning game scores over the Vikings were 30-18, 30-19 and 30-26. In other play-in round action, second-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 21-12, 6-1 CCIW) defeated seventh-seeded Millikin University (21-14, 2-5 CCIW), 3-1; third-seeded Wheaton College (Ill., 25-8, 4-3 CCIW) defeated sixth-seeded Elmhurst College (14-18, 3-4 CCIW), 3-2; and fifth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (20-16, 3-4 CCIW) outlasted fourth-seeded North Central College (26-8, 3-4 CCIW) by a 3-2 margin.
Men’s Soccer
The Carthage College men’s soccer team (14-6-2, 7-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Washington University (Mo., 14-6-2), 2-1, on Nov. 10 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship at Wisconsin-Whitewater in Whitewater, Wis. Washington (Mo.) had a 1-0 halftime lead behind a goal by Nat Zenner at 10:06. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Eric Hill at 87:07. The Red Men’s lone goal was scored by Brian Santella at 88:39. This was Carthage's first-ever trip to the NCAA championship.
Carthage lost to Wheaton College (Ill., 12-6-1), 2-1, on Oct. 31 in the semifinals of the CCIW Men’s Soccer Tournament at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. In the other semifinal contest on Oct. 31, second-seeded Elmhurst College (15-4-1, 6-1 CCIW) outlasted third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan (6-12, 4-3 CCIW), 4-2, in a shootout following double-overtime. Wheaton (Ill., 13-6-1) blanked Elmhurst (15-5-1), 3-0, in the Nov. 3 tournament-championship game at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.
Women’s Soccer
The Carthage College women’s soccer team (16-5-1, 5-1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to Wartburg College (18-3-1), 2-1 in overtime, on Nov. 11 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship at Wisconsin-Eau Claire in Eau Claire, Wis. Carthage defeated Concordia College (Moorhead, 16-4-1), 2-1, on Nov. 10 in a first-round game, while Wartburg College (17-3-1) upset No. 15 Wisconsin-Eau Claire (18-2-2), 2-1. In Carthage’s loss to Wartburg, the Lady Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Keeley Monckton at 22:13. Three and one-half minutes later, the Knights knotted the game with a goal by Jamie Frederick at 25:58. Following a scoreless second half, Wartburg won the game in overtime when Logan Webb scored her first goal of year at 98:13 on a corner kick from Lauren Thomas. This was Carthage’s first-ever trip to the NCAA championship.
Carthage lost to top-seeded and No. 1 Wheaton College (Ill.. 22-0, 7-0 CCIW), 3-0, on Nov. 3 in the championship game of the CCIW Women’s Soccer Tournament at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill. With the win, Wheaton (Ill.) secured the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. The Thunder have won 40-straight games, the second-longest streak in NCAA history,
Second-seeded Carthage opened play in the tournament on Oct. 30 with a 3-0 win over Augustana College (Ill., 13-4-1, 5-2 CCIW) in a semifinal contest at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis., while Wheaton (Ill.) edged fourth-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (7-8-3, 3-3-1 CCIW), 3-2 in overtime, in the other semifinal contest. This was Carthage’s first trip to the CCIW championship round after losing semifinals games in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Men’s Cross Country
The Carthage College men’s cross country team (75-45) finished eighth at the Nov. 10 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. Wisconsin-La Crosse won the 35-team championship event with 70 points, six points ahead of second-place Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 76. CCIW-member North Central College was third at 118, followed by conference-member Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 152, Wisconsin-Platteville fifth at 178, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) sixth at 210, Washington University (Mo.) seventh at 227 and Carthage eighth with 276 points. The eighth-place finish was the best-ever for the Red Men at the regional level.
The Red Men’s Michael White (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished 13th with a time of 24:45.96, which qualified him to compete in the Saturday, Nov. 17 NCAA Division III Cross Country championship as an individual. White finished 63rd at the national event, which was conducted at the St. Olaf College Skoglund Athletic Fields in Northfield, Minn., with a time of 25:34. The top-35 individual finishers earn NCAA Division III All-America honors. New York University won the national championship with 128 points, 22 points ahead of second-place Haverford College at 150. White was only the second Carthage cross country runner to qualify for the NCAA championship. Al Stiefel finished 59th at the 1965 NCAA College Division Cross Country Championship and 19th at the same event in 1969.
White earned all-regional honors along with Michael Bubolz (Sr., Reedsville, Wis./Kiel) who finished 20th with a time of 24:54.97. White earned all-regional honors last year with a 20th-place regional finish. Eric Pennington who finished 35th in 2000, is Carthage’s only other all-regional honoree. Both White and Bubolz broke the 25-minute mark, the first time that two Carthage runner have done that at the regional level. The Red Men’s Justin Sebens was 79th at 25:57, Sean O’Connor 81st at 26:06, and Joel Brunner finished 83rd at 26:09. Also finishing for Carthage were Tylor Lewis 112th at 26:45 and Tyler Wishau 148th at 27:29.
Carthage finished fifth at the Oct. 27 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Cross Country Championship at Maxwell Park in Bloomington, Ill. North Central College won its 41st conference title and its 34th in a row with 37 points, 25 points ahead of both Wheaton College (Ill.) and Augustana College (Ill.) at 62 each. Elmhurst College was fourth at 108, followed by Carthage fifth at 114, Millikin University sixth at 180, Illinois Wesleyan University seventh at 207 and North Park University eighth with 251 points. Brandon Mull from Wheaton (Ill.) won the 8K race with a time of 25:02.49. Carthage’s Michael White earned All-CCIW honors with a fourth-place finish and a time of 25:26.12. Michael Bubolz was 23rd at 26:27.97, Justin Sebens 33rd at 27:00.47, Joel Brunner 34th at 27:02.52, and Tylor Lewis finished 39th with a 27:23.91 mark.
Women’s Cross Country
The Carthage College women’s cross country team (82-45) finished 15th at the Nov. 10 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. Washington University (Mo.) won the 37-team championship event with 41 points, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire second at 87, Wisconsin-Platteville third at 99, Wisconsin-La Crosse fourth at 113, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth at 221, Wisconsin-Stevens Point sixth at 223, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) seventh at 232, conference-member North Central College eighth at 269, Wisconsin-River Falls ninth at 302, Wisconsin-Whitewater 10th at 325, CCIW-member Augustana College (Ill.) 11th at 345, Carroll College (Wis.) 12th at 389, CCIW-member Illinois Wesleyan University 13th at 435, the University of Chicago 14th at 445 and Carthage 15th with 467 points. The Lady Reds’ Karen Jackson earned all-regional honors with a 35th-place finish and a time of 22:39.92. Megan Johnson was 68th at 23:26.94, Molly Lawrence 98th at 23:53.82, Laura Pearson 130th at 24:25.22, and Julia Hiett finished 136th at 24:32.64. Also finishing for Carthage were Kathy Zbella 139th at 24:35.59 and Justine Petras 162nd at 25:07.52.

Augustana College (Ill.) was third at 83, followed by Elmhurst College fourth at 99, Carthage fifth at 113, Illinois Wesleyan University sixth at 134 and Millikin University seventh at 216. Marisa Mele from Elmhurst won the 6K race with a time of 22:31.31. Carthage’s Karen Jackson earned All-CCIW honors with a sixth-place finish and a time of 23:25.96. Megan Johnson also earned all-conference honors by finishing 12th at 24:01.61. Laura Pearson was 18th at 24:19.60, Molly Lawrence 41st at 25:28.00, and Julia Hiett was 43rd with a 25:33.41 mark. The Lady Reds conclude their 2007 season at the Saturday,., beginning at 11 a.m.
Women’s Golf
The Carthage College women’s golf team (56-55-1) tied for fifth place at the Oct. 5-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championship at the Red Tail Run Golf Club in Decatur, Ill. Illinois Wesleyan University won its sixth CCIW title, all in a row since 2002, with a two-day team score of 311-317-628, 33 strokes ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 325-336-661. Millikin University was third at 332-333-665, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 336-342-678, Carthage at 347-332-679 tied for fifth with North Central College at 331-348-679, Elmhurst College seventh at 366-367-733 and North Park University eighth with a 420-402-822 mark.
North Central’s Alyssa Gaudio took medalist honors with a 75-78-153, while Illinois Wesleyan’s Alessandra Bollero was second at 76-78-154. Carthage’s Shanna Agner earned All-CCIW honors for the second-straight year by finishing fifth with a Carthage-record two-day score of 82-77-159, and her round off 77 on the second day led the field. Katie Ramirez tied for 14th place at 87-82-169, Kelly Lazar was 20th at 90-85-175, and Becky Volkman tied for 25th at 89-88-177. Sarah Jung finished 29th at 89-91-180, and Amy Binstein was 30th with a 92-89-181.
Carthage plays twice on a spring trip to Chandler, Ariz. The Lady Reds will take on North Central College on Monday, March 17 at the Ocotillo Golf Club, beginning at 8 a.m. On Wednesday, March 19, Carthage and North Central play again, along with Mesa Community College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College, also at the Ocotillo Golf Club, beginning at 8 a.m.
