Smeds Tennis Facilities
Thanks to a $1 million gift from Edward W., '57, and Alice,
'57, Smeds, Carthage College opened the Smeds Tennis Center
in October 1999, on Alford Park Drive, just northwest of
the campus and across the road from the Carthage Softball
Field. The new tennis complex includes 10 courts, six of
which feature lights and stadium seating.
The salvaged
restaurant building on the site houses locker rooms,
restrooms, a team-meeting space and a concession area.
Prior to 1999, Carthage played its home matches on a site
just west of the Carthage Physical Education Center, which
was converted to parking space as part of the N.E. Tarble
Athletic and Recreation Center construction project in
2000-01. Prior to 1964, the team played at an on-campus
facility in Carthage, Ill.
