Carthage played host to Eastern Illinois University in an April 25, 1964 doubleheader at Annie Reyer Field in Carthage, Ill.  In the opener, the  Panthers defeated the Red Men, 11-1, and the winning pitcher was Marty Pattin, an NAIA All-American that year and the national strikeout leader.  Pattin struck out 19 Red Men and walked one in that game.  Carthage lost to Pattin again in 1965, 16-1.  In June 1965, Pattin became a seventh-round draft pick of the California Angels and had a 13-year career in Major League Baseball.  Carthage won the second game, 1-0, to stop Eastern Illinois’ 15-game winning streak.  The Red Men opened the 1965 season with a three-game set in Charleston, Ill.
