The Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Carthage's First League

From 1912 to 1941, Carthage was a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IIAA) for football, men's basketball, baseball, men's golf and men's track and field.  According to former Illinois State University track and field coach Joe Cogdal, the league had its roots in the 1870s when a number of Illinois schools banded together for oratorical contests.  The first intercollegiate football game within this association was played in 1881 between Illinois State and Knox College, and a football association was established for the 1894 season.

The IIAA was formed in April 1908 for a May 22 track and field meet with eight charter members, including the Bradley Polytechnic Institute (later Bradley University), Illinois College, Illinois State Normal University (later shortened to Illinois State University), Illinois Wesleyan University, Knox College, Lombard College (now defunct), Millikin University and Monmouth College.  By the 1910-11 season, the league had expanded to 13 teams with the addition of Eureka College, Hedding College (now defunct), Lincoln College, Shurtleff College (now defunct) and William & Vashti College (now defunct).  The 1910-11 season also marked the start of league competition in football, basketball and baseball.

Four schools were added for the 1912-13 season, including Augustana College (Ill.), Carthage College, Eastern Illinois Normal University (later shortened to Eastern Illinois University) and McKendree College.  Southern Illinois Normal University (later re-named Southern Illinois University-Carbondale) became the 18th member during the 1913-14 academic year.  Three more schools were added in 1914-15 to boost the membership to 21 schools.  Those three were Blackburn College, St. Viator College (now defunct) and Western Illinois Normal University (later shortened to Western Illinois University).  William & Vashti closed in 1917 reducing the league to 20 members, but both Knox College and Wheaton College (Ill.) joined the circuit in 1919-20 when the league name was changed to the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association (IIAC), bringing the membership up to 22 schools.

Somewhere along the line, the IIAC gained the nickname of the Little 19 Conference, even though the membership ranged from the high of 24 in the 1927-28 season schools to just five by the spring of 1942.  Blackburn withdrew following the 1923 season, and Hedding College closed in 1926 after being bought out by Illinois Wesleyan.  Other schools added to the league in the 1920s included Elmhurst College, Lake Forest College, Mount Morris College (now defunct), North Central College and Northern Illinois Normal University (later re-named Northern Illinois University).

Conference membership peaked in 1927-28 with 24 members.  Lincoln pulled out after 1928 spring season.  Lombard quit after 1929, and the school closed in 1930 and was taken over by Knox College.  Mount Morris pulled out following the 1931 campaign and closed the following year.  The conference really began to falter after the 1936-37 season when 12 schools withdrew to form the Illinois College Conference.  Those 12 schools were Augustana, Bradley, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Knox, Lake Forest, McKendree, Millikin, Monmouth, North Central, Shurtleff and Wheaton.  St. Viator closed in 1938.  Carthage, Elmhurst and Eureka withdrew from the IIAC in December 1941, leaving only five schools:  Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois.

In 1950, the league changed its named from the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when Eastern Michigan University and Central Michigan University brought the membership to seven schools.  Eastern Michigan (joined the Mid-American Conference in 1971) and Southern Illinois (currently in the Missouri Valley Conference) both withdrew in 1961, and Northern Illinois left for the Mid-American Conference in 1966, dropping the league to four members.  The final demise of the IIAC came in 1969 when Illinois State left to join the Academic Athletic Conference of Midwestern Universities (now a member of the Missouri Valley conference).  The remaining three schools disbanded the league at the end of the 1969-70 academic year, with Central Michigan joining the Mid-American Conference in 1971, Eastern Illinois joining the Mid-Continent Conference in 1982 after 12 years as in the NAIA, and Western Illinois also joining the Mid-Continent Conference.

Carthage’s First Baseball Twinbill

The Redmen played their first known baseball doubleheader on May 24, 1913, versus Western Illinois University.  The games were played in Carthage, Ill., and the second game was called after five innings because the visitors from Macomb, Ill., had to catch a train back to campus.

Baseball was dropped at Carthage after the 1921 season, which may have had something to do with the College’s hiring of Lewis Omer as athletic director and football coach in April 1921.  Omer reportedly told the student newspaper, “The Carthage Collegian,” in the spring of 1923 that he could not coach baseball without sacrificing his spring football practice.  That’s the way things stayed throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s.  When Carthage helped form the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in 1946, baseball was reinstated as a varsity sport and resumed play in the 1947 season.  Head baseball coach L. Paul LaVinn doubled as football coach in 1947.

Lacking a home field, the Redmen were the “road warriors” in 1947, playing all nine games at opposition fields.  From 1948 to 1950, the baseball team called the Jaycee Field, just west of downtown Carthage, Ill., their home park.  The College began construction of its first, on-campus facility in 1950, but the field was not ready in time for the 1951 campaign.  Annie Reyer Field, just north of the Carthage campus, opened in time for the 1952 season.

Carthage took its first spring-break trip in 1951, playing an independent team from Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., on March 25 and Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., on March 26.  Following several days in New Orleans, La., where the Redmen reportedly bumped into the Wheaton College team, Carthage traveled to Lafayette, La., they lost a pair of games to Southwest Louisiana University.

Dave Swisegood, ’52, the long-time baseball coach at Central-Southeastern High School in Augusta, Ill., set an Illinois High School Association record on April 7, 2008 with his 893rd career victory.  With a 6-1 decision over Lewistown High School, Swisegood broke a mark of 892 set by Oak Park-River Forest’s Jack Kaiser, and Swisegood now ranks 16th on the national list, according to the National Federation of High Schools.  The all-time leader is Gene Schultz, the coach at Kee High School in Lansing, Iowa with 1,523 victories.

Since defeating Bowen High School, 3-2, for his first win in 1956, the 77-year-old Swisegood enjoyed 40 winning seasons.  From 1980 to 1989, his teams won no fewer than 21 games and captured seven regional titles.  Overall, his teams have won 10 regional championships.

Swisegood played on the 1949-52 Carthage teams in Carthage, Ill., and was coached by Bill Strickland in 1949 and 1950 and by Loel Fredrickson in both 1951 and 1952.  He had a brief career as a player in the Cincinnati Reds’ farm system and later scouted for the organization.  He began his coaching career at Plymouth High School in 1956 and compiled a 417-207 mark in 25 years at Plymouth, which later became part of the Southeastern school district.

After Carthage College moved to Kenosha, Wis., in 1964, the Redmen played their 1965 and 1966 seasons at Petzke Park near the corner of 31st Street and 17th Avenue on Kenosha's north side.  In 1966, Carthage also began a tradition of playing occasional games at Kenosha's Simmons Field.  The Redmen played 1966 doubleheaders versus Wisconsin-Whitewater and Carroll (Wis.) at Simmons.  The Carthage Baseball Field was completed in time for the 1967 season,

Four Times Four for the Redmen

Carthage is the second team in organized baseball, and the only collegiate squad ever to play and win four games in one day.   This remarkable feat took place on May 18, 1970, when the Redmen swept North Park College, 5-0 and 2-0, in a morning doubleheader and followed that with a 12-3 and 6-5 sweep of Illinois Wesleyan University in the afternoon.

The quadrupleheader came about as the Carthage team found itself in a three-way race for the CCIW title in the final week of the season.  After the games of Saturday, May 16, Illinois Wesleyan  (10-2, .833) led the league by percentage points over North Park (11-3, .786), with Carthage in third place (8-4, .667).

Five days of rain in the Midwest washed out several doubleheaders the final week, including a Carthage-North Park set in Kenosha, Wis., and two games with Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill.  Normally, those games could have been re-scheduled for the following week, but Carthage was set to close its dormitories on Sunday, May 17, with the end of the academic year.  Classes actually ended on May 12, and several baseball players were ready to leave campus for previously-arranged summer jobs.  As a last resort, Carthage coach Augie Schmidt III offered to play the North Park games in Chicago on Monday, May 18, and to play Illinois Wesleyan immediately after, also on North Park’s field.  North Park and Illinois Wesleyan agreed.

The North Park twinbill started at 10 a.m., and Carthage's Tim Breuhl threw a no-hitter in the nightcap to complete a sweep of the Vikings, 5-0 and 2-0.  The Redmen had only a 25-minute break between the morning and the afternoon doubleheaders.  Carthage defeated Illinois Wesleyan, 12-3, in the first game of that set.  The Redmen won the fourth and final game in dramatic fashion.  With Carthage trailing, 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Craig Deaton hit a two-run triple with two outs and an 0-2 count for a 6-5 Redmen victory at 7:30 p.m.

Seven Carthage players played all 28 innings that day, and catcher Fred Richter caught all four games.  Craig Deaton drove in 11 runs on the day.  After the marathon ended, coach Schmidt said, “I doubt if any of us imagined we could win four games in one day from the two leading teams in the league.  I think we were hoping for a split at worst and three-of-four at best, but our confidence seemed to blossom with each win.  By the time we reached the final game, we had the feeling that nobody could beat us.”

With the four victories, Carthage finished the season with a 12-4 record that Illinois Wesleyan matched the next day.  Following the completion of their twinbill against Carthage, the Titans returned home from Chicago and then traveled to Decatur, Ill., the next morning to sweep Millikin in a season-ending doubleheader.  With identical 12-4 records, Illinois Wesleyan and Carthage were declared co-champions.

According to researchers from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), a Hudson, N.Y., minor league team, playing in the Hudson River League, swept a Sept. 20, 1903 quadrupleheader against Poughkeepsie.  A quintupleheader was attempted once in the same league, but the two final games were thrown out, as the teams failed to play a required minimum number of innings.  In the major leagues, a quadrupleheader has never been attempted, although several tripleheaders have occurred.

Between 1972 and 1976, Carthage played three additional quadrupleheaders, although the Redmen never duplicated the 1970 sweep.  Carthage played its second quadrupleheader on April 6, 1972, on its spring trip to Oklahoma and Texas.  The Redmen played a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Tishamingo, Okla., versus Murray State College, sweeping 8-3 and 11-5.  Following a 1 1/2 hour bus trip to Perrin Air Force Base in Grayson, Texas, the Redmen split a twinbill with Grayson County College, winning the first game, 12-5, but losing the second contest by a 3-2 margin.  The second game was called after Carthage’s bat in the top of the fifth inning, due to an 11 p.m. curfew on the base.  The day before, the Redmen had played a tripleheader.

Carthage’s third “four-bill” took place on May 10, 1973, when the Redmen played host to Carroll (Wis.) College in a morning doubleheader, sweeping, 11-3 and 6-0, and then traveled to Milwaukee to take on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in an afternoon set.  The Redmen lost both games to Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 4-3 and 6-5.

The Redmen’s fourth and final quadrupleheader took place on March 23, 1976, on another spring trip to Texas.  Carthage won the first two games at Texas Wesleyan University in Dallas, winning 7-0 and 8-2, before traveling to Plano to take on Plano University, where the Redmen lost both games, 5-0 and 3-0.

#NCAA Central Regional

The 2011 team played 11 of its 44 games, or 25 percent of its schedule, in the Bloomington-Normal area.  Including the regular season, the CCIW Baseball Tournament and the NCAA Division III Central Region Championship, Carthage played 10 times at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Jack Horenberger Field in Bloomington, Ill., with the title game of that year’s CCIW Baseball Tournament being played at The Corn Crib in Normal, Ill.  The regular-season series with Illinois Wesleyan was played on a single day in an April 23 tripleheader, all seven-inning games.
