Carthage played Illinois-Chicago in 1952. The Flames went NCAA Division I in men's basketball in 1982.
Illinois State University
While the Carthage-Illinois State series spans nine games, only the last meeting on Nov. 29, 1980, took place after the Redbirds became an NCAA Division I affiliate in 1972. Illinois State won that contest by a 96-40 margin in Normal, Ill., after jumping out to a 48-15 lead.

Carthage played Northern Illinois University 11 times between 1938 and 1943 before the Huskies joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1968.
Southern Illinois University-Carbondale
Carthage played Southern Illinois University-Carbondale seven times between 1916 and 1920 prior to the Salukis becoming an NCAA Division I member in 1968.0
Valparaiso University
The Crusaders, who rejoined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1977 after previously a previous stint from 1948-58), have a 3-1 records over the Red Men since 1977. In the first game of the series on Dec. 16, 1977 in the first round of the 1977 Valparaiso "Crusader Classic," the Red Men pushed Valparaiso to double-overtime before falling by a 94-87 margin. Coach Jon Swift's Red Men stunned the Crusaders with a one-point victory, 77-76, on Nov. 25, 1978, also in Valparaiso. Coach Tim Miller's teams lost two games at Valparaiso, 84-68, on Feb. 25, 1993, and, 86-56, on Dec. 3, 1994. Bryce Drew, son of coach Homer Drew and later an NBA player, scored 17 points in that 1994 contest.
Western Illinois University
Carthage's longest-running men's basketball series is with Western Illinois University. The two former-neighbors in downstate Illinois played each other 84 times between 1911 and 1954 before the Leathernecks became an NCAA Division I affiliate in 1982.
Wisconsin-Milwaukee
Carthage played Wisconsin-Milwaukee eight times between 1955 and 1986, all during periods when the Panthers were not an NCAA Division I affiliate. Wisconsin-Milwaukee was an NCAA Division I affiliate from 1974-80 and rejoined in 1991.
