Carthage Men’s Golf Finishes Second at CCIW Championship;

Tyler Wollberg Ties for 15th Place at NCAA Championship

Tyler Wollberg Ties for 15th Place at NCAA Championship:  While Carthage missed out on winning the CCIW’s automatic team qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship, Tyler Wollberg  (Jr., Mundelein, Ill., team-leading 73.5 final season average) was selected to play as an individual.  Wollberg was one of five individuals selected to play at the Tuesday-Friday, May 13-16 championship at the Chateau Elon Resort in Braselton, Ga.  This year’s event was co-hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission.  Wollberg finished in a four-way tie for 15th place with a 76-73-77-74-300, 15 strokes behind the leader, St. John Fisher’s Scott Harris Jr., at 68-71-71-75-285.  With his top-15 finish, Wollberg earned Golf Coaches Association of America/PING second-team All-American honors.  Wollberg was also named 2007 Golf Coaches Association of America/PING second-team All-America by with a 13th-place tie at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship with a 71-80-81-73-305.  He was in second place after the first day of the national championship with a 71, which matched his career-best round.

 

2008 CCIW Championship:  The Carthage College men’s golf team (79-19) finished second at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men’s Golf Championship.  The first two rounds were played on Friday-Saturday, April 18-19 at the Bolingbrook Golf Course in Bolingbrook, Ill.  Rounds three and four were played on Friday-Saturday, May 2-3 at the Cantigny Golf Course in Wheaton, Ill.  Illinois Wesleyan won its 11th league championship with a 294-296-312-307-1209 team score, 17 strokes ahead of second-place Carthage at 304-287-319-316-1226.  Wheaton College (Ill.) was third at 305-305-317-317-1244, followed by Millikin University fourth at 303-298-332-321-1254, North Central College fifth at 326-308-331-324-1289, Elmhurst College sixth at 319-326-334-322-1301, North Park University seventh at 312-318-336-337-1303 and Augustana College (Ill.) eighth at 324-317-356-334-1331. 

 

Wollberg Named All-Regional:  Tyler Wollberg  (Jr., Mundelein, Ill., team-leading 73.5 final season average) was named Golf Coaches Association of America/PING All-Central Region.

 

The Coach:  Dave Roehl completed his sixth season as head coach in 2007-08 (459-143-9, 6 years).  Roehl, a long-time private golf instructor at Brighton Dale Golf Links in Kansasville, Wis., is also an assistant men’s basketball coach at Carthage.

 

The Conference:  The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 62nd year in 2007-08, has sponsored men’s golf as a championship sport since its inception in 1947.  Millikin University and Augustana College (Ill.) have dominated the men’s golf championship over the years, with Millikin winning 18 titles and Augustana 16 championships.  Illinois Wesleyan won its 11th CCIW title in 2008.  Carthage has won seven times, and former-CCIW member Carroll College (Wis.) won five times, followed by Lake Forest College with four, North Central College with two and Elmhurst College with one title.  Augustana was the league power in the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning six straight titles from 1978-1982.  Millikin won a conference-record eight-straight championships from 1983-1990, and Carthage won four-consecutive titles from 1991-1994.

 

New CCIW Championship Format Started in 2007:  The CCIW athletic directors, at their September 2006 meeting, approved a new format for the CCIW Men’s Golf Championship, beginning in 2007.  Instead of the previous 36-hole championship played at the Elks Country Club in Pontiac, Ill., the championship was expanded to a four-day, 72-hole event and played on two separate weekends on two courses.  The 2007 CCIW Men’s Golf Championship was conducted on April 20-21 at the Bolingbrook Golf Club in Bolingbrook, Ill., and on May 4-5 at the Tournament Players Club at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.  The winner of the tournament receives the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship. 

 

April 22 Carthage “Spring Invitational” Notes:  Carthage’s Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill.) and teammate Matt Carr (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.) tied for first place at the April 22 Carthage “Spring Invitational” at 72, with Wollberg winning a two-hole scorecard-playoff for medalist honors.  Dave Mikolaitis (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) tied for third place at 76, Tim Gannon (Jr., Darien, Ill./Lombard-Montini) tied for sixth at 77, and Anthony Milano (So., Geneva, Ill.) finished 27th with an 85.  Jared Hallam (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.), playing for the Red Men’s junior varsity team, also tied for sixth place with a 77.  Other junior varsity scores included Andy Wojciechowicz (Fr., Racine, Wis./Kenosha-Bradford) at 77, Kevin Hengtgen (So., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey, 80.7 season average) at 78, Kevin Kayser (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill./LaGrange-Lyons Township, 82.1) at 78, Drew Ballantyne (Sr., Racine, Wis./St. Catherines) at 79, Bobby O’Neill (Fr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way East) at 79, Chris Kilcoyne (Sr.  Oak Lawn, Ill., 82.5) at 84, Drew Lockerby (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./North, 84.5) at 84, Jake Smiley (Fr., St. Charles, Ill./East) at 84, Andrew McCarty (Fr., Geneva, Ill., 86.8) at 88, Craig Mertes (Jr., Appleton, Wis./North, 92.0 at 90 and Nick Vranes (Fr., Greendale, Wis., 85.0) at 90.

 

April 26 Lawrence Invitational Notes:  Carthage’s Tim Gannon (Jr., Darien, Ill./Lombard-Montini) took medalist honors at the April 26 Lawrence University “Viking Invitational” with a 73.  Teammate Matt Carr (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.) was third at 75, Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill.) fourth at 76, Anthony Milano (So., Geneva, Ill.) tied for sixth place at 78, and Dave Mikolaitis (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) tied for 26th place with an 85.  The Red Men also sent three junior varsity players to the event.  Jake Smiley (Fr., St. Charles, Ill./East) tied for 10th place with an 80, Jared Hallam (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.) tied for 22nd with an 83, and Bobby O’Neill (Fr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way East) tied for 30th place with an 86.

 

April 28 Wisconsin-Parkside Notes:  Robert Morris’ Herving Sanchez took medalist honors at the April 28 Wisconsin-Parkside “American Family Classic” with a 76.  Carthage’s Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill.) was second, also with a 76.  Teammate Dave Mikolaitis (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) tied for ninth place with an 80, Anthony Milano (So., Geneva, Ill.) tied for 13th with an 81, Matt Carr tied (Jr., Galesburg, Ill.) for 20th with an 84, and Tim Gannon (Jr., Darien, Ill./Lombard-Montini) tied for 35th place with an 89.  Five Carthage junior varsity players competed in the event.  Jared Hallam (Jr., Galesburg, Ill., 78.3) tied for seventh place with a 79, Jake Smiley (Fr., St. Charles, Ill./East, 84.2) tied for 20th with an 84, Bobby O’Neill (Fr., Mokena, Ill./Frankfort—Lincoln-Way East, 80.9) tied for 23rd with an 85, Andy Wojciechowicz (Fr., Racine, Wis./Kenosha-Bradford, 83.0) tied for 26th with an 86, and Drew Ballantyne (Sr., Racine, Wis./St. Catherines, 82.6) also tied for 26th place with an 86.

 

CCIW Championship Notes:  Illinois Wesleyan University’s Chris Green at 72-74-73-75-294 shared the CCIW Men’s Golf Championship lead with Carthage’s Tyler Wollberg (Jr., Mundelein, Ill.) at 74-69-75-76-294, but Green won a four-hole, sudden-death playoff to claim medalist honors.  Wollberg earned All-CCIW honors, along with teammate Matt Carr (Jr., Galesburg, Ill., 76.9), who finished fifth at 74-70-81-78-303.  Dave Mikolaitis (Sr., Algonquin, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic, 80.3) was 13th at 78-74-82-81-315, Anthony Milano (So., Geneva, Ill., 80.1) tied for 14th at 78-74-83-81-316, and Tim Gannon (Jr., Darien, Ill./Lombard-Montini, 78.5) finished 19th with an 80-76-81-82-319.
