CARTHAGE MEN’S SOCCER NOTES

2006 Season Review

The 2006 Carthage College men’s soccer team (11-5-3, 5-1-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin), coached by Steve Domin (114-95-16, 12 years) reached the CCIW Men’s Soccer Tournament for the third-straight year.  The second-seeded Red Men lost to third-seeded Wheaton College (Ill.), 3-1, in a tournament semifinal game at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.  Carthage’s 11-5-3 finish was its best overall mark since the 1997 team went 15-5, and its second-place conference finish matched the 1996 team’s effort.

Carthage opened the season with a pair of losses in California, losing to the University of LaVerne, 2-0, and falling to the University of Redlands by a 3-1 margin.  The Red Men returned home and rolled up eight wins and three ties in their next 11 games.  One of those ties was 0-0 double-overtime affair with eventual-conference champion North Park University.  In that 11-game unbeaten streak, Carthage out-scored its opponents by an 18-3 margin.  Carthage won three of its final games, all in conference, to finish with a 5-1-1 league mark and second place.

Four Carthage players were named All-CCIW.  Midfielder Max Zbilut (graduated-senior, Kenosha, Wis./Tremper, 5 goals, 1 assist) was named first-team All-CCIW, with goal keeper Andy Connor (Jr., Lake Zurich, Ill./Mundelein-Carmel, 1.09 goals-against average, 7 shutouts), midfielder Chris Fidlow (Jr., Gurnee, Ill./Mundelein-Carmel, 2 goals, team-leading 7 assists) and defender Pat Walsh (Sr., Carmel, Ind.) earning second-team all-conference honors.  In addition, Zbilut was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America second-team All-Wisconsin, and Fidlow was named honorable mention all-state.

2007 Season Outlook

Coach Steve Domin returns 18-of-22 letterwinners and 10-of-11 starters from last year’s 11-5-3 team.  Max Zbilut is lost to graduation.  In addition to All-CCIW returnees Andy Connor, Chris Fidlow and defender Pat Walsh, the Red Men return defender/forward Greg Goldsberry (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township, 5 goals, 2 assists), forward Alex Laurn (Jr., Hudsonville, Mich., 3 goals, 1 assist), defender Roger Straz (Jr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West, 3 goals, 1 assist), defender/midfielder Doug Fitzgerald (Jr., Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Mundelein-Carmel, 3 goals), forward Ryan Batley (Sr., Neenah, Wis., 2 goals, 1 assist), midfielder Gary Mouradian (Jr., Antioch, Ill., 1 goal, 2 assists), midfielder Mike Grba (So., San Diego, Calif./Glenview, Ill.-Glenbrook South, 1 goal) and defender/midfielder Michael Armour (Jr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township).

The Red Men open their 2007 season by playing host to the Carthage “Battle on the Border” Tournament, taking on Calvin College and Buena Vista University.  Carthage makes a mid-September trip to the Boston-area to play the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Tufts University.  Other 2007 non-conference opponents include Cardinal Stritch University, Loras College, St. Mary’s University (Minn.), St. Ambrose University, St. Norbert College, Lake Forest College, Carroll College (Wis.) and Lakeland College.
