Tom Hartog, ’78, won CCIW titles in the 100 backstroke four-straight years from 1975 to 1978, won CCIW titles in the 200  backstroke three-consecutive years from 1975 to 1977, and he finished second in the 200 backstroke at the 1978 CCIW meet.  He was a two-time honorable mention NCAA Division III All-American, finishing 11th in the 100 backstroke at both the 1977 and 1978 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.  Hartog was named a winner of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship in 1978 and was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000.

 

Spencer Rice, Carthage’s first-ever triple winner at the CCIW Swimming and Diving Championships, took first place in the 1998 50  freestyle, the 100  freestyle and the 100  butterfly.  Rice shared 1998 MVP honors with Wheaton (Ill.)’s Eric Baldwin.

 

Judson Koenitzer, ’78, was a two-event CCIW champion in both 1975 and 1977, winning both the 50 and the 100 freestyle.  He finished second in both events in 1976 and second in the 50  freestyle in 1978.  Koenitzer was named an NCAA Division III All-American in 1978 with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Grinnell College.  The year before, Koenitzer was named honorable mention NCAA Division III All-American with a ninth-place finish in the 100  freestyle.  Koenitzer was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

 

Nathaniel Chapman, ’06, earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-America honors in eight events, including the 200 backstroke in 2004;  the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke and the 400 individual medley in 2005; the 200 backstroke, the 400 medley relay, the 400 freestyle relay and the 800 freestyle relay in 2006.  He was named the “most valuable performer” at the 2005 CCIW Men’s Swimming Championship with first-place finishes in the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke, the 400 individual medley, the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay.  Over the course of his career, Chapman earned all-conference citations in 15 events, including 10 championships.  He was named College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-Academic Individual four-straight years, CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine District 5 all-academic in 2005 and 2006 and CCIW “Jack Swartz All-Academic” in 2006.

 

Henry Somers, ’06, earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-America honors in both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay in 2006.  He earned All-CCIW honors in 11 events over the course of his career, including eight championships.

 

A seven-time College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-American (four individual, three relays), Zach Jole, ’07, also won 11 CCIW titles over his career (five individual, six relays) and was named the CCIW Men’s Swimming “Most Valuable Swimmer.”  When he graduated in 2007, Jole was listed as the 11th-fastest 200 breaststroker in NCAA Division III history.
