2012 NCAA Doubles Championship: Carthage’s No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis./Horlick) and Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands) lost its quarterfinal match in the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship on Friday, May 25 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The Red Men duo fell to Warren Elgort and Jacob Barnaby from Johns Hopkins University, 6-3 and 6-4. Lotz and Hazelman advanced to the quarterfinals with a Thursday, May 24 first-round win over Williams College's Bryan Chow and Richard Meyer, 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. By advancing to the quarterfinals, Lotz and Hazelman earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America honors and finished the year with a Carthage-record 34-4 mark.
2012 CCIW Championship: The Carthage College men’s tennis team (20-8, 4-1 College
Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) defeated Augustana College (Ill., 16-11),
6-3, in the Saturday, May 5 third-place match at the CCIW Men's Tennis
Championship at Augustana College (Ill.) in Rock Island, Ill. Carthage was
edged by Elmhurst College (15-8), 5-4, on Friday, May 4 in the semifinals. Wheaton
College (Ill., 17-5) nipped Augustana (Ill., 16-10), 5-4, in the other
semifinal contest. In first-round play, Elmhurst blanked North Central College
(3-15), 6-0, and Augustana (lll.) won over Illinois Wesleyan University by a
5-3 margin. In Friday's final match, Illinois Wesleyan (7-10) beat North
Central (Ill., 3-16), 5-1 for fifth place. On Saturday, May 5, Wheaton (Ill.,
18-5) won its 24th CCIW title by defeating Elmhurst (15-9), 6-3, in the title
match.
Jeff Lotz Jr. Named CCIW “Player of the Year”: Carthage’s Jeff Lotz
Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis., 27-10) was named 2012 College Conference of Illinois
and Wisconsin “Men’s Tennis Player of the Year.” Lotz is Carthage’s seventh
“player of the year,” all since 1994. Joining Lotz as All-CCIW honorees were
first-team member Daneric Hazelman (Sr.,
Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 29-7) and second-team member Matt Whiteside (Sr.,
Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 25-5).
2011-12 ITA Midwest Regional Championship: Carthage traveled to St. Peter, Minn., on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Championship at Gustavus Adolphus College. Carthage’s Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis., 6-1) advanced to the Sunday, Oct. 2 singles semifinals, where he lost to Fabricio Moncada from St. John’s University (Minn.), Moncada winning, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4). Lotz, with a first-round bye, defeated Luther College’s James Ayer, 6-3, 6-0, in the second round; defeated Gustavus Adolphus’ Marcel Gwyswyt, 6-3, 6-7, 10-3, in the third round; won over Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Andy McGlashen, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the fourth round; and defeated Carleton College’s Andrew Hwang, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 3-1) received a bye in first-round singles before losing to Gustavus Adolphus’ Tyler Johnson, 6-4, 7-5, in the second round. Alex McLean (Sr., Belleville, Ill./West, 2-2) defeated St. Norbert College’s Tim Hartwick 6-2, 6-4, in first-round play before losing to Coe College’s Curtis Newman, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. Nick Boomgarden (Sr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 2-2) fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Michael Boden, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round.
In doubles play, the Red Men’s team of Lotz and Hazelman (4-1) advanced to the semifinals before losing. Lotz and Hazelman received a first-round bye; won over Allen-Michael Muench/Zach Nipper from the University of St. Thomas (Minn.), 8-5, in the second round; defeated Daniel Pomeranc/Joey MacGibbon from Gustavus Adolphus, 8-6, in the third round; won over St. Olaf College’s John Wigt/Andy Catania, 8-4, in the quarterfinals; and lost to Gustavus Adolphus’ Amrik Donkena/Mya Smith-Dennis, 8-6, in the semifinals. McLean and Boomgarden (1-2) lost their first-round doubles contest to Macalester College’s Stephen Tyndel/Lewis Wilcox, 8-3.
The Polls: Amherst College was ranked first in the May 3 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NCAA Division III poll, followed by Emory University second, Williams College third, Kenyon College fourth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College fifth, the University of California-Santa Cruz sixth, California Lutheran University seventh, Trinity University (Texas) eighth, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges ninth and Bowdoin ranked 10th. Kenyon was ranked first in the May 3 ITA Central Region poll, followed by Washington University (Mo.) second, Case Western University third, Gustavus Adolphus College fourth, Denison University and DePauw University tied for fifth place, the University of Chicago ranked seventh, Kalamazoo College eighth, Wisconsin-Whitewater ninth and Carleton College ranked 10th. CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) was ranked 12th in the regional poll, conference-member Elmhurst College 15th and Carthage College 17th. Carthage’s Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis.) was ranked 18th in the May 3 regional-singles listings, with the doubles team of Lotz and Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands) tied for fourth in the region.
I Love St. Peter, Minn., Parts 31-32: Carthage College tennis coach Brady Lindsley made his 31st and 32nd career trips to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., in the fall of 2011, first for the Sept. 23-25 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Midwest Regional Women’s Championship and then for Sept. 30-Oct. 2 men's event. Lindsley has made 16 trips with the Carthage men’s tennis team, including 12 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional tournaments and four NCAA appearances. He has made 13 other trips to Gustavus Adolphus with the women’s tennis team, including 11 ITA tournaments and two NCAA appearances. In addition, Lindsley made the trip three times as a Carthage player between 1992 and 1995. At 408 miles one way, or 816 round-trip miles, Lindsley has covered 26,112 miles in those 32 trips. The circumference of Earth is approximately 24,900 miles.
The Coach: Brady Lindsley completed his 15th year as head coach in 2011-12 for both men’s and women’s tennis (273-105 men's record, 15 years). Lindsley, Carthage’s all-time winningest men’s tennis coach, has been named CCIW "Men's Tennis Coach of the Year" eight times (1998, 2001, 2003-05, 2007, 2008 and 2010).
The Conference: The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 66th year in 2011-12, has sponsored men’s tennis as a championship sport since the league’s inception in 1947. Augustana College (Ill.) and Wheaton College (Ill.) have dominated the league championships, with Wheaton (Ill.) winning 24 times, including 11 straight undisputed titles from 1986 to 1996, a shared title with Augustana in 1985 and a shared title with Carthage College in 2001. Augustana (Ill.) has won 22 times, including 15-of-19 years from 1965 to 1984. Carthage has won eight times and Illinois Wesleyan five. Carthage won its first-ever league title in 2001, sharing it with Wheaton (Ill.), and the Red Men won eighth-straight outright championships from 2004 to 2011. As of 2004, the CCIW determines its men’s tennis championship by playing a six-team team tournament, with the top-two teams in the regular-season standings receiving a bye in the first round.
CCIW Player of the Week: Elmhurst College's Vince McPherson Jr. (So., Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin "Tennis Player of the Week" on May 2. McPherson went 4-0 last week playing at No.2 and No. 3 singles, as well as No. 2 doubles. He defeated Tim Staffeld from Concordia University (Wis.) at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1, and Jack Cullen from Augustana College (Ill.) at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He then teamed with Kevin Noble at No. 2 doubles and defeated Concordia’s Vince Termini and Chayanne Martinez, 8-0, and Augustana’s Jack Cullen and Colin Arnold by an 8-3 margin.
2012 CCIW Championship Notes: In the third-place match, Carthage's Jeff Lotz Jr. (Jr., Racine, Wis./Horlick, 27-10) ranked 18th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Adam DeSimone, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands, 29-7) handled Andy Wall at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Matt Whiteside (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep, 25-5) topped Jack Cullen, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Alex McLean (Sr., Belleville, Ill./West, 12-22) came back to beat Colin Arnold, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in a tightly contested No. 4 singles match. Nick Boomgarden (Sr., Fitchburg, Wis./Verona Area, 16-21) lost to Kevin Bayles, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8, at No. 5 singles, and Brian Howes (Jr., Bartlett, Ill., 13-19) fell to Grant Wick, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Carthage's No. 1 doubles duo of Lotz and Hazelman (33-3), ranked fourth in the region, shutout DeSimone and Wall, 8-0. Whiteside and Boomgarden (23-8) got the best of Cullen and Arnold at No. 2 doubles, 8-4. McLean and Conner Moon (Fr., Sussex, Wis./Woodstock, Ill./Marian Central Catholic, 10-20) dropped a tough 9-8 decision to William Palmer and Bayles at No. 3 singles, 9-8 (7-1).
The Record Book: With wins over Augustana College (Ill.) and the University of Dubuque on April 21, Matt Whiteside (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./Natomas Pacific Pathways Prep) collected his 86th career singles victory and broke a Carthage record of 84 set by Tres Heimann between 2003 and 2006. Whiteside wound up with 90 wins…Jeff Lotz Jr., (Jr., Racine, Wis./Horlick) enters the 2012-13 season needing 19 singles wins to tie Whiteside's career record…with a win over North Central College on April 27, Carthage's No. 1 doubles team of Jeff Lotz Jr. and Daneric Hazelman (Sr., Lautoka, Fiji Islands) broke a Carthage season record of 30 wins set by Nate Deist and Mike Meske in 2002. Lotz and Hazelman wound up with 34 wins and also set a Carthage career mark with 57 wins.
