CARTHAGE MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD NOTES

 

2011 Season Review

The Carthage College men’s track and field team finished third at the 2011 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ericson Stadium in Rock Island, Ill.  North Central College won its 33rd CCIW title with 284 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 243, Carthage third at 101, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 73, Illinois Wesleyan University fifth at 56, Millikin University sixth at 36, North Park University seventh at 16 and Elmhurst College eighth with 10 points. 

 

Carthage’s Brad Fortney (Sr., Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) won the shot put (52-9 ¼) and finished third in the discus (157-6).  Mike Oratowski (Sr., Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn-Glenbard South) won the 110-meter high hurdles (15.14), and Josh Brennan (graduated-senior, Geneva, Ill.) took first place in the hammer throw (196-2).  Prentis Wilbourne (graduated-senior, Racine, Wis./Case) was second in the long jump (22-4 ¼), as was Jarrayl Johnson (Sr., Flossmoor, Ill./South Holland-Thornwood) in the shot put (52-4).  Greg Raimondi (Sr., Harwood Heights, Ill./Norwood-Ridgewood) was third in both the hammer throw (176-7) and the shot put (51-11 ¼), and he was named “co-most outstanding field athlete.”  Cale Brown (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was third in the triple jump (45-8 ½). 

 

Carthage had three individual qualifiers for the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Field and George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio.  Jarrayl Johnson earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the shot put (55-9 1/4) and broke a 1977 school record of 55-0 set Bill Versen.  Josh Brennan finished 11th in the hammer throw (185-10) and Greg Raimondi 16th in the hammer throw (176-6).  Carthage tied for 57th place in the outdoor championship.

 

The Red Men finished third at the 2011 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.  North Central College won its 11th indoor championship with 245.50 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 155, Carthage third at 95.50, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 85, Elmhurst College fifth at 32, Millikin University sixth at 26 and North Park University seventh with 17 points. 

 

Carthage’s Jose Flores (Sr., Round Lake, Ill./Fox Lake-Grant Community) won the 800-meter run (1:54.90).  Mike Oratowski finished second in the 55-meter high hurdles (7.76), as did Cale Brown in the triple jump (45-7) and Brad Fortney in the shot put (51-8 ¼) .  Prentis Wilbourn was third in the triple jump (44-8 ¾), as was Justin Sebens (graduated-senior, Seymour, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) in the high jump (6-5 ½) and Jarrayl Johnson in the shot put (51-7).  Greg Raimondi took fourth place in both the shot put (51-0) and the weight throw (58-4 ½), while Marshall Stewart (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.22).

 

2012 Season Preview

Coach Brett Witt (317-105 indoor record/216-95-2 outdoor record, 6 years) returns 27-of-36 letterwinners from last year’s third-place CCIW team.  Leading returnees include Jarrayl Johnson (U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association outdoor All-America and sixth nationally in the shot put), Brad Fortney (CCIW shot-put champion, and third in the discus), Mike Oratowski (CCIW champion in the 110-meter high hurdles), Greg Raimondi (third in both the CCIW hammer throw and the shot put, CCIW’s “co-most outstanding field athlete,” and 16th nationally in the hammer), Jose Flores (CCIW indoor champion in the 800-meter run) and Cale Brown (third in the CCIW triple jump). 

 

Top newcomers include Marquette University transfer sprinter Aryan Avant (So., Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), pole vaulter Colin Bennett (Fr., Antioch, Ill., a sectional qualifier), pole vaulter Calvin Callahan (Fr., Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence, a state qualifier) and thrower Derrik Guyette (Fr., Hortonville, Wis., a state finalist in the shot put).

 

The Red Men will compete in six outdoor meets prior to the May 4-5 CCIW Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Tucci Stadium.  Those six meets are the North Central College “First Chance Invitational,” the Chicagoland Outdoor Track and Field Championship, the Wheaton College (Ill.) “Twilight Invitational,” the Augustana College (Ill.) “Meet of Champions,” the Drake University Relays and the Wisconsin Private College Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ripon College.
