2007 Season Review
The Carthage College men’s track and field team finished third at the 2007 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track and Field Championship at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. North Central won its 31st league championship and 23rd in a row with 276.5 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 212, Carthage third at 103, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 67, Illinois Wesleyan University fifth at 55.5, Millikin University sixth at 44, Elmhurst College seventh at 38 and North Park University eighth with 18 points.
Carthage’s Brandon Jones-Harris (graduated-senior, Evanston, Ill../Evanston Township) won the outdoor hammer throw (162-2 ¾), while finishing second in the shot put (48-4). Tanner Folk (graduated-senior, Rock City, Ill./Dakota) finished second in both the long jump (23-2 ¼) and the triple jump (45-6 ¼). Michael White (Sr., New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:22.31), as did Chris Hightower (graduated-senior, Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) in the hammer throw (156-0 ¾). Nate Blazier (graduated-senior, Princeton, Ill.) was fourth in the pole vault (15-4 ¼), as was Buzzy Brown (So., Naperville, Ill./Nequa Valley) in the long jump (22-3 ¼), Shaun Jozwiak (Sr., McHenry, Ill./Johnsburg) in the shot put (48-2 ¼) and Jacob Burg (graduated-senior, South Milwaukee, Wis.) in the hammer throw (154-6).
The Red Men finished third at the 2007 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship at Illinois Wesleyan University’s Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill. North Central won its seventh-consecutive indoor title with 197.83 points, followed by Augustana (Ill.) second at 187.66, Carthage third at 115, Illinois Wesleyan fourth at 78, Elmhurst fifth at 49.50, Millikin sixth at 36, Wheaton (Ill.) seventh at 32 and North Park eighth with five points.
Carthage’s Brandon Jones-Harris was named the “most outstanding field performer” at the indoor conference championship with wins in both the shot put (49-0 ¼) and the weight throw (56-3 ¾). Tanner Folk won the long jump (22-7 ¼), while finishing third in the triple jump (43-11 3/4) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (50.62). Buzzy Brown finished second in the high jump (6-2 ¼) and fifth in the long jump (21-0). Chris Hightower finished second in the weight throw (51-1 ¾). Michael White finished third in the one-mile run (4:19.83), as did Jacob Burg in the weight throw (49-8 1/4). Dan Hrvatin (So., Plano, Ill./Joliet-Catholic Academy) finished fourth in the 55-meter dash (6.57), as did Nate Blazier (graduated-senior, Princeton, Ill.) in the long jump (21-2).
Carthage won the 2007 Wisconsin Private College Track and Field Championship at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis. The Red Men won their seventh state title and fifth in a row with 182.50 points, followed by the Milwaukee School of Engineering second at 104.25, St. Norbert College third at 94, Carroll College (Wis.) fourth at 83, Beloit College fifth at 69, Lakeland College sixth at 60.25, Concordia University (Wis.) seventh at 60, Ripon College eighth at 51.25, Lawrence University ninth at 40.75, Wisconsin Lutheran College 10th at 26 and Edgewood College 11th with five points.
Brandon Jones-Harris won three events at the state meet, taking first place in the shot put (48-1 ¾), the discus (148-3) and the hammer throw (158-4). The Red Men also collected first-place finishes from Michael White in the 1,500-meter run (4:03.57), Pat Coffey (So., Crown Point, Ind.) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (57.35) and Nate Blazier in the pole vault (14-5 ½). Robbie Harsted (So., Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township) finished second in the pole vault (13-11 ¾), as did Tanner Folk in the triple jump (45-1 ½).
2008 Season Preview
Coach Brett Witt (91-34 indoor record, 68-31 outdoor record, 2 years) returns 24-of-40 letterwinners from last year’s team. Leading returnees include Michael White (second in the CCIW outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase and third in the indoor one-mile run), Buzzy Brown (second in the CCIW outdoor long jump and second in the indoor high jump), Dan Hrvatin (So., Plano, Ill./Joliet-Catholic Academy, fourth in the CCIW indoor 55-meter dash) and Seth Kuttruff (Sr., Tomah, Wis., sixth in the CCIW outdoor decathlon).
Top newcomers include triple jumper Tyler Jump (Fr., Necedah, Wis., a three-time state qualifier) and hurdler Geno Verucchi (Fr., Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy, a three-time Tri-County Conference champion in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles).
