Women’s Golf Finishes Fourth at the Robert Morris Spring Invitational;

April 27 Event Concludes Lady Reds’ 2011-12 Season

 

2011-12 Season-Finale:  The Carthage College women’s golf team (66-46-3) concluded its 2011-12 season by finishing fourth at the Friday, April 27 Robert Morris University-Lake County "Spring Classic" at the Bonnie Brook Golf Course in Waukegan, Ill.  North Central College won the 10-team event with a 328 team score, eight strokes ahead of second-place the University of St. Francis (Ill.) at 338.  Illinois Wesleyan University was third at 337, followed by Carthage fourth at 345, the Wisconsin-Whitewater “B” team fifth at 354, Olivet Nazarene University sixth at 355, Robert Morris-Lake County seventh at 365, Wheaton College (Ill.) eighth at 367, Holy Cross College ninth at 371 and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College 10th with a 375 mark.

 

2011-12 CCIW Championship:  Carthage, ranked 33rd in the Sept. 29 Golf Digest NCAA Division III poll, finished third at the 2011-12 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Women’s Golf Championship at the Emeis Park Municipal Golf Course in Davenport, Iowa.  Illinois Wesleyan University won its 10th league title, all in a row, with a 317-312-326-955 team score, 58 strokes ahead of second-place North Central College at 339-337-337-1013.  Carthage was third at 339-341-339-1019, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 339-346-361-1046, Elmhurst College fifth at 348-346-357-1051, Millikin University sixth at 342-359-360-1061, Wheaton College (Ill.) seventh at 352-367-348-1067 and North Park University eighth with a 424-421-415-1260 mark.

 

2012 NCAA Championship:  CCIW-champion Illinois Wesleyan University represented the league at the 2012 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship.  The event took place on May 9-12 at the Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.  Illinois Wesleyan, making its eighth-straight appearance at the national meet, finished eighth at 1274, trailing Methodist College at 1242, DePauw University at 1248, Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 1255, Centre College at 1256, Williams College at 1265, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at 1267 and George Fox University at 1269.

 

The Polls:  Methodist College (17 first-place votes) was ranked first in the Sept. 28 Golf Digest NCAA Division III poll, followed by DePauw University second, Washington University (Mo.) third, Gustavus Adolphus College fourth, Centre College fifth, CCIW-member Illinois Wesleyan University and Wisconsin-Eau Claire tied for sixth, George fox University eighth, Allegheny College ninth and Williams College ranked 10th.  CCIW-member North Central College was ranked 24th and Carthage College was tied for 33rd place in the national poll.

 

The Coach:  Tyler Wollberg (11-22, 1 year) took over as head women’s golf coach, beginning with the spring portion of the 2011-12 season.  Wollberg served as a part-time assistant women’s coach in the fall and in the same capacity last spring with the men’s golf team, following a standout playing career with the Red Men between 2006 and 2009.  A native of Mundelein, Ill., Wollberg was the medalist at the 2006 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Men’s Golf Championship his freshman year.  As a sophomore, he finished second at the 2007 CCIW championship and earned National Golf Coaches Association of America second-team All-America honors with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship.  Wollberg tied for first place at the 2008 conference championship and was a repeat NGCA second-team All-America pick with a 15th-place tie at the national championship.  As a senior in 2009, he finished second at the conference tournament and was named NGCA third-team All-America. 

 

The Conference:  The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 66th year in 2011-12, began sponsorship of women's golf as a championship sport in 1996, and Carthage won the inaugural title.  The Lady Reds also won the 1997, 1998 and 1999 titles before Millikin ended the string by winning both the 2000 and 2001 titles.  Illinois Wesleyan University won its 10th-consecutive championship in 2011-12.

 

2011-12 CCIW Championship Notes:  Illinois Wesleyan’s Katie Klosterman took medalist honors with a 10-over-par 73-76-77-226, while Millikin’s Brittany Holmes was second at 70-82-81-233.  Carthage’s Taylor McAdams (Jr., Sycamore, Ill., team-leading 84.1 season average) earned All-CCIW honors with a seventh-place finish at 81-82-85-248.  Tabby Bell (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic, 87.6) also earned all-conference honors with a 10th-place finish at 86-85-82-253.  Julie Klawitter (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey, 88.1) tied for 15th place with an 85-85-89-259, Erin Holst (Fr., Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley, 85.4) tied for 17th at 87-89-86-262, Jenna Apple (Jr., Bloomington, Ill., 89.6) tied for 23rd at 91-91-86-268, and Heidi Chronowski (Jr., Monticello, Iowa, 86.8) tied for 30th place with a 92-92-87-271.

 

April 27 Robert Morris-Lake County Spring Invitational  Notes:  North Central’s Mallory Carr took medalist honors with a 76.  Carthage’s Heidi Chronowski (Jr., Monticello, Iowa, 86.3 season average) tied for eighth place with an 84.  Taylor Dory (So., Menomonee Falls, Wis.. 89.9) and Julie Klawitter (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey, 88.7) shot 86s, Tabby Bell (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic, 88.3) an 89, Jenna Apple (Jr., Bloomington, Ill., 89.9) a 90, and Erin Holst (Fr., Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley, 85.7) finished with a 93.
