CARTHAGE WOMEN’S SOCCER NOTES

2006 Season Review

The 2006 Carthage College women’s soccer team, coached by Susie Foster (22-11-5, 2 years) went 12-5-2 in 2006 (4-1-2 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) and qualified for the CCIW Women’s Soccer Tournament for the third-straight year.  The fourth-seeded Lady Reds lost to top-seeded Wheaton College (Ill.), 3-0, in a semifinal game at East McCully Field in Wheaton, Ill.  Second-seeded Augustana College (Ill., 14-1-3) played third-seeded Illinois Wesleyan University (10-5-4) to a 3-3 tie in double-overtime in Rock Island, Ill., in the other semifinal, with Augustana (Ill.) advancing to the championship, 7-6, on penalty kicks.

Carthage opened the season by splitting a pair of games in California, shutting out the University of Redlands, 2-0, before falling to Concordia College (Moorhead) by 1-0 margin.  After returning home, Carthage went 2-1-1 over its next four games, including a 2-1 overtime loss to then-No. 12 University of Chicago.  Following the loss to the Maroons, the Lady Reds rolled up nine-straight wins and a 10-game unbeaten streak to up their record to 12-2-1.  Carthage ended the regular season with a 2-0 loss to Wheaton (Ill.) and 2-2 tie with Illinois Wesleyan University.

Four Carthage players were named All-CCIW.  Forward Shannon Chesna (So., Fond du Lac, Wis., 9 goals, 3 assists), defender Paige Land (Jr., Barrington, Ill., 6 goals, 1 assist), midfielder Keeley Monckton (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South, 5 goals, team-leading 7 assists) and midfielder Jackie Peterson (Jr., Schaumburg, Ill., team-leading 11 goals, 6 assists) were all named second-team all-conference.  Land, Monckton and Peterson were also named second-team All-CCIW in 2005.

2007 Season Outlook

Third-year head coach Susie Foster returns 18-of-25 letterwinners and all 11 starters from last years’ 12-5-2 team.  In addition to All-CCIW players Shannon Chesna, Paige Land, Keeley Monckton and Jackie Peterson, other returning starters include goalkeeper Lindsey Bollman (Jr., Greendale, Wis./Martin Luther, 0.84 goals-against average, 4 shutouts), midfielder Lindsey Plass (Jr., Bloomingdale, Ill./Roselle-Lake Park, 4 goals, 3 assists), forward Devon Wilfling (Jr., Neenah, Wis., 3 goals, 5 assists), defender Kelly Baumgartner (Jr., Oswego, Ill., 1 goal, 4 assists), midfielder/defender Eric Faden (Jr., Grayslake, Ill., 1 goal, 1 assist), forward/midfielder Tiffany Martin (Jr., Burlington, Wis., 2 assists) and defender Ashleigh Johnson (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper).

Other returnees include forward/midfielder Laura Garcia-Rodriguez (Sr., Waukegan, Ill., played in all 19 games, 4 goals, 1 assist), midfielder Lauren Landem (So., Batavia, Ill., played in 17-of-19 games, 4 goals) and forward/midfielder Alison Iglehart (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South, played in 16-of-19 games, 1 goal).  Leading newcomers include Reiko Arimura (Fr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown, Daily Herald all-area), Jaclyn Arndt (Fr., Princeton, Ill., all-sectional), Jen Carlson (Fr., Lombard, Ill./Glen Ellyn-Glenbard South, Daily Herald all-area), Kelsey Harrington (Fr., McHenry, Ill./West, Northwest Herald all-area), Maria Korosis (Fr., Lindenhurst, Ill./Lake Villa-Lakes Community, 2005 and 2006 Daily Herald all-area), Jamie Long (Fr., Plainfield, Ill./Central, All-Suburban Prairie Conference) and Jenna Volpe (Fr., Schaumburg, Ill., 2005 Daily Herald all-area and all-sectional).

The Lady Reds open their 2007 season by playing host to the Carthage “Battle on the Border” Tournament, taking on Viterbo College and Buena Vista University.  The Lady Reds make a mid-September trip to the Boston-area to play the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Tufts University.  Other 2007 non-conference opponents include Cardinal Stritch University, Loras College, St. Ambrose University, the University of Chicago, Clarke College, Lake Forest College and Carroll College (Wis.).
