Women’s Swimming Wins the Jan. 28 Wisconsin Private College Title;
CCIW Swimming Championship Next on Feb. 16-18 at Carthage
Next Action: The Carthage College women’s swimming team (7-1 dual meet record) plays host to the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship on Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 16-18 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. (10:30 a.m./6 p.m. each day).
Last Action: Carthage won the Saturday, Jan. 28 Wisconsin Private College Swimming Championship at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Lady Reds won the six-team event with 308 points, followed by Carroll University (Wis.) second at 102, Lawrence University third at 97 , Beloit College fourth at 79, the Marquette University club team fifth at 58 and Ripon College sixth with 18 points. The state title was the 13th overall for the Lady Reds and their 10th in a row.
Looking Ahead: The Lady Reds expect to have several qualifiers for the Wednesday-Saturday, March 21-24 NCAA Division III Swimming Championship at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of Indiana-Purdue at Indianapolis.
The Coach: Beth DeLaRosby is in her fourth year as head coach in 2011-12 (21-9 dual-meet record, 4 years thru the 2011-12 season). She has led the Lady Reds to top-10 finishes as the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming Championship her first three years. DeLaRosby was named CCIW “Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year” in 2009, her first year at Carthage, and again in 2010. A native of Two Harbors, Minn., DeLaRosby was an assistant swimming coach at Springfield College in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Prior to that, she served as an assistant coach at Wheaton College (Mass.) in 2005-06. DeLaRosby attended Gustavus Adolphus College, where she earned College Swimming Coaches Association of America first-team All-America honors in both 2004 and 2005, placing third in the 50-freestyle in 2004 and tying for sixth place in the same event in 2005. She graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s in psychology and criminal justice and received her master’s in physical education from Springfield in 2008.
The Polls: Emory University was ranked first in the Dec. 19 CollegeSwimming.com/College Swimming Coaches Association of America NCAA Division III poll, followed by Denison University second, Kenyon College third, Johns Hopkins University fourth, Williams College fifth, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology sixth, Amherst College seventh, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College eighth, the University of Chicago ninth and the College of New Jersey ranked 10th. CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) was ranked 28th in the poll.
2011 NCAA Championship: Carthage finished 10th at the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming Championship at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Emory University won the NCAA women’s title with 614 points, followed by Denison University second at 428, Williams College third at 382, Kenyon College fourth at 351, the College of New Jersey fifth at 198, the Stevens Institute of Technology sixth at 184, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College seventh at 133, Johns Hopkins University eighth at 131.50, Amherst College ninth at 121 and Carthage 10th with 90 points.
2011 CCIW Championship: Carthage finished second at the 2011 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Swimming Championship at the Wheaton College (Ill.) Chrouser Fitness Center Pool in Wheaton, Ill. Wheaton (Ill.) won its 19th CCIW title and 14th in a row with 892.50 points, followed by Carthage second at 830, Illinois Wesleyan University third at 779, Augustana College (Ill.) fourth at 289.50, North Central College fifth at 288, Millikin University sixth at 205 and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology seventh with 127 points.

The Conference: The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 66th year in 2011-12, has sponsored women’s swimming as a championship sport since 1987. Wheaton College (Ill.) has won 19 championships, including the last 14 in a row thru the 2011 season, and Augustana College (Ill.) has won six times. In 2007-08, the CCIW added the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, located in Terre Haute, Ind., as an associate conference member for men’s and women’s swimming. Rose-Hulman, a member of the Heartland Conference in all other sports, is the CCIW’s first associate member.
CCIW Swimmer of the Week: Amanda MacLurg (Fr., Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) was named the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin “Women’s Swimmer of the Week” on Feb. 7. MacLurg swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM, finishing second with a time of 2:17.69 in a double-dual meet with Illinois Wesleyan University and North Central College on Feb. 4. She also swam a lifetime best in the 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 55.86.
Jan. 28 Wisconsin Private College Championship Notes: Carthage’s 200 medley relay team of Jensena Paul (Sr., Portage, Wis./Portage), Sarah Wodnik (So., Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), Gretchen Heidorn (So., Rochester, Minn./Century) and Emily Voss (Jr., Downers Grove, Ill./South) took first-place with a time of 1:54.90. Paul also took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.42.
Two other Lady Reds relay teams took first place. The team of Voss, Kelly Loftus (So., Winfield, Ill./West Chicago), Alisa Danzer (Fr., Racine, Wis./Case) and Megan Shover (Fr., Prospect Heights, Ill./Arlington Heights-St. Viator) won the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.43). and the team of Ember McCoy (So., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) , Natalia Bialecka (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Park Ridge-Maine East) , Lisa Perdue (Fr., Whittier, Calif./Whittier) and Ashley Gladis (Fr., Batavia, Ill./Batavia) claimed the 800 freestyle relay (8:26.78).
Gladis won three individual events, taking first place in the 100 butterfly (1:00.32), the 100 freestyle (54.55) and the 200 freestyle (2:00.18). McCoy won the 500 freestyle with a meet-record time of 5:15.40, which broke a mark of 5:16.88 set by McCoy last year. The Lady Reds also picked up first-place finishes from Bialecka in the 50 freestyle (25.3) and Loftus in the 400 IM (5:03.20).
