CARTHAGE WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD NOTES

 

2007 Season Review

The Carthage College women’s track and field team (49-11 indoor record/33-12 outdoor) finished fifth at the 2007 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track and Field Championship at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.  North Central won its fifth league championship and its first since 2002 with 207.5 points, followed by Augustana College (Ill.) second at 199, Wheaton College (Ill.) third at 128, Illinois Wesleyan University fourth at 123.5, Carthage fifth at 91.5, Millikin University sixth at 41, Elmhurst College seventh at 14.5 and North Park University eighth with seven points.

 

Carthage’s Patrice Russell (graduated-senior, Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) finished second in the CCIW outdoor shot put (41-1 ½) at the CCIW Outdoor Track and Field Championship.  Julie Rendino (Jr., McHenry, Ill./East) finished third in the javelin (122-2 ¼) and fourth in the shot put (38-7).  Justine Petras (Sr., McHenry, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:52.93), as did Angela Hartman (not retuning, Chadwick, Ill./Prince of Peace Prep) in the 800-meter run (2:14.90) and Ashley Grahovec (Sr., Yorkville, Ill./Aurora-Rosary) in the heptathlon (3,601 points).  Megan Johnson (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Normal-Community) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:53.93), as was Becky Rivard (Jr., Bradley, Ill./Kankakee-Bishop McNamara) in the heptathlon (3,272 points).

 

Carthage won the 2007 Wisconsin Private College Track and Field Championship at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The Lady Reds won their 12th state title and fifth in a row with 209 points, followed by Carroll College (Wis.) second at 153, Ripon College third at 135, St. Norbert College fourth at 77, Beloit College fifth at 72, Lawrence University sixth at 54, Concordia University (Wis.) seventh at 27, the Milwaukee School of Engineering eighth at 26, Wisconsin Lutheran College ninth at 12 and Lakeland College 10th with three points. 

 

Carthage collected first-place finishes at the state meet from Tori Cherney (not returning, Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.24), Angela Hartman in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:06.53), Sarah Zigman (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in the pole vault (10-11 ¾) and Patrice Russell in the shot put (41-3).  Jenelle Champion (So., Rockford, Ill./Guilford) finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.84), as did Hartman in the 400-meter dash (1:00.77), Ashley Grahovec in the 100-meter high hurdles (16.26), Justine Petras in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:15.50) and Jenny Lachmann (graduated-senior., Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) in the high jump (5-0 ¼).

 

Carthage finished fourth at the 2007 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Illinois Wesleyan University Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.  North Central College won its second-straight indoor title with 202 points, followed by Illinois Wesleyan University second at 149, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 128, Carthage fourth at 77.50, Wheaton College (Ill.) fifth at 70.50, Millikin University sixth at 42, Elmhurst College seventh at 17 and North Park University eighth with 15 points.

 

Carthage’s Patrice Russell finished second in the indoor CCIW shot put (40-7 ¾) and fifth in the weight throw (44-0) at the Feb. 24 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Illinois Wesleyan University Shirk Center in Bloomington, Ill.  Jenny Lachmann finished second in the high jump (5-3 ¾).  Angela Hartman finished third in the 800-meter run (2:16.23).  Jessica Beach (So., Sycamore, Ill./Burlington-Central) finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (59.91) and fifth in the 200-meter dash  (26.68).  Ashley Grahovec finished fifth in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.83).

 

Carthage’s Angela Hartman finished eighth in the 800-meter run (2:18.14) at the 2007 NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Sports and Recreation Center in Terre Haute, Ind.  Hartman, Carthage’s lone representative in the championship, earned NCAA Division III All-America honors with the eighth-place finish. 

 

2008 Season Preview

Head coach Stephanie Domin (190-51 indoor record, 4 years/180-41 outdoor record, 4 years) returns 28-of-43 letterwinners from last year’s team.  Leading returnees include Julie Rendino (third in the CCIW outdoor javelin and fourth in the shot put), Justine Petras (third in the CCIW outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase), Ashley Grahovec (third in the CCIW outdoor heptathlon), Megan Johnson (fourth in the CCIW outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase) and Jessica Beach (fourth in the CCIW indoor 400-meter dash and fifth in the CCIW indoor 200-meter dash).

Top newcomers include jumper/sprinter Bethany Doty (Fr., Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central, a three-time All-Big Northern Conference honoree and a three-time state qualifier), jumper/sprinter Shacuána Gaines (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township, 2007 North Suburban League triple jump champion), hurdler/jumper Heather Gilmore (So., Des Moines, Iowa/Pleasant Hill, a University of Iowa transfer and a four-year all-state honoree), thrower Ahvia Greene (Fr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley, a 2007 state qualifier), thrower Mindy Harrington (Fr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton, a four-time state qualifier), sprinter Ashura Jenkins (Fr., Aurora, Ill./Christian, 2006 Illinois High School Association indoor champion in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash), distance runner Molly Lawrence (Fr., Plainfield, Ill./Central, All-South Suburban Conference), sprinter Kelly McHale (Fr., Naperville, Ill./North, three-time All-DuPage Valley Conference honoree) and jumper Stephanie Moy (Fr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West, three-year All-Central Suburban League North honoree).
