2008 NCAA Outdoor Championship: Carthage’s Heather Gilmore (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa-Pleasant Hill-Southeast Polk) qualified for the May 22-24 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the 100-meter high hurdles at Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wis.. Gilmore did not qualify for the finals.
2008 CCIW Outdoor Championship: The Carthage College women’s track and field team (43-16 outdoor record) finished fifth at the Friday-Saturday, May 2-3 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track & Field Championship at North Park University’s Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago. Augustana College (Ill.) won its 12th league championship with 171 points, three points ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 168 and six points ahead of third-place Illinois Wesleyan University at 165. North Central College was fourth at 137.50, followed by Carthage fifth at 129.50, Millikin University sixth at 22, Elmhurst College seventh at 13 and North Park University eighth with nine points.
2008 Wisconsin Private College Championship: Carthage won the Saturday, April 26 Wisconsin Private College Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Ripon College’s Ingalls Field. The state title was the 13th for the Lady Reds and their sixth in a row. Carthage won the 11-team event with 195 points, four points ahead of second-place Carroll College (Wis.) at 191. Ripon College was third at 94, followed by St. Norbert College fourth at 89, Beloit College fifth at 75, Concordia University (Wis.) sixth at 51, Lawrence University seventh at 38, Wisconsin Lutheran College eighth at 23, Edgewood College ninth at 14, Lakeland College 10th with five points and the Milwaukee School of Engineering 11th with two points.
2008 CCIW Indoor Championship: Carthage (58-22 indoor record) finished fifth at the March 1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis. Illinois Wesleyan University won first-ever indoor title with 187.50 points, followed by North Central College second at 160, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 134, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 63, Carthage fifth at 60, Millikin University sixth at 38.50, Elmhurst College seventh at 10 and North Park University eighth with seven points.
The Coach: Stephanie Ulicny is in her fifth year as head coach in 2008 (251-75 indoor record, 5 years/209-52 outdoor record, 5 years) after serving three years as associate head coach and three years as an assistant. Susanna Craven is the assistant coach, with John Anderson and Tanya Hasenjager serving as part-time assistant coaches.
The Conference: The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 62nd year in 2007-08, began sponsorship of women's outdoor track and field as a championship sport in the 1986-87 school year. Augustana College and North Central College have dominated the league since then. Augustana has won 12 times, while the Cardinals have won six league titles. Carthage won its first-ever outdoor championship in 2003 and repeated in both 2004 and 2005. Wheaton College (Ill.) won its first-ever outdoor title in 2006. Carthage won the league's inaugural indoor title in 2001 and repeated in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005. North Central won both the 2006 and 2007 indoor championships, while Illinois Wesleyan University won the 2008 title.
2008 CCIW Indoor Championship Notes: Carthage’s Karen Jackson (So., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley) won the 5,000-meter run (18:29.54) at the March 1 CCIW Indoor Track and Field Championship in Kenosha, Wis. Stephanie Moy (Fr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) finished fourth in the pole vault (10-10), as did Shacuána Gaines (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) in the triple jump (35-2 ½) and Hailey Webb (Sr., Racine, Wis/Washington Park) in the weight throw (45-6). Ashley Johnson (Jr., Romeoville, Ill.) finished fifth in the 800-meter run (2:22.44).
2008 Wisconsin Private College Championship Notes: Carthage’s Heather Gilmore (Fr., Des Moines, Iowa-Pleasant Hill-Southeast Polk) won both the 100-meter high hurdles (16.24) and the long jump (16-1) at the April 26 Wisconsin Private College Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Stephanie Moy (Fr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) won the high jump (4-11 ½) and finished second in the pole vault (10-6). Shacuána Gaines (Fr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) won the triple jump (34-9 ¾), while finishing third in the 400-meter dash (62.82). The Lady Reds collected wins from Ashley Johnson (Jr., Romeoville, Ill.) in the 1,500-meter run (5:07.81), Megan Johnson (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Normal-Community) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:18.73) and Mindy Harrington (Fr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) in the discus (145-0). Laura Pearson (Sr., Twin Lakes, Wis./Schaumburg, Ill. H.S.) was second in the 5,000-meter run (19:29.84), as was Justine Petras (Sr., McHenry, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:36.93) and Julie Rendino (Jr., McHenry, Ill./East) in the hammer throw (131-2). Ashley Grahovec (Sr., Yorkville, Ill. Rosary-Aurora) was third in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.02), as was Sarah Zigman (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in the pole vault (10-0), Ahvia Greene (Fr., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the shot put (37-8 ¾), Hailey Webb (Sr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) in the hammer throw (131-2) and Danica Johnson (So., Saybrook, Ill./Colfax-Ridgeview) in the javelin (94-7). The Lady Reds also picked up a win from the their 1,600-meter relay team.

Hailey Webb (Sr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) took second place in the hammer throw (136-3 ¾), as did Ashley Grahovec (Sr., Yorkville, Ill./Rosary-Aurora) in the heptathlon (3,863 points). Julie Rendino (Jr., McHenry, Ill./East) was third in both the hammer throw (136-3 ¾) and the javelin (120-7 ¾), while Stephanie Moy (Fr., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) finished third in the high jump (4-11 ½) and fourth in the pole vault (10-10 ¼). Mindy Harrington (Fr., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) finished third in the discus (136-6 ¼), and Ashura Jenkins (Fr., Aurora, Ill./Christian) was fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.84).
