2008 Carthage Women’s Track and Field Review/2009 Season Outlook

 

2008 Season Review

The Carthage College women’s track and field team (43-16 outdoor record/58-22 indoor) finished fifth at the 2008 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Outdoor Track & Field Championship at North Park University’s Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago.  Augustana College (Ill.) won its 12th league championship with 171 points, three points ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 168 and six points ahead of third-place Illinois Wesleyan University at 165.  North Central College was fourth at 137.50, followed by Carthage fifth at 129.50, Millikin University sixth at 22, Elmhurst College seventh at 13 and North Park University eighth with nine points. 

 

Carthage’s Heather Gilmore (So., Des Moines, Iowa-Pleasant Hill-Southeast Polk) finished second in both the 100-meter high hurdles (14.76) and the long jump (17-7 ¾).  Hailey Webb (graduated-senior, Racine, Wis./Washington Park) took second place in the hammer throw (136-3 ¾), as did Ashley Grahovec (graduated-senior, Yorkville, Ill./Rosary-Aurora) in the heptathlon (3,863 points).  Julie Rendino (Sr., McHenry, Ill./East) was third in both the hammer throw (136-3 ¾) and the javelin (120-7 ¾), while Stephanie Moy (So., Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) finished third in the high jump (4-11 ½) and fourth in the pole vault (10-10 ¼).  Mindy Harrington (So., Spring Grove, Ill./Richmond-Burton) finished third in the discus (136-6 ¼)., and Ashura Jenkins (So., Aurora, Ill./Christian) was fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.84).

 

Carthage won the 2008 Wisconsin Private College Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Ripon College’s Ingalls Field.  The state title was the 13th for the Lady Reds and their sixth in a row.  Carthage won the 11-team event with 195 points, four points ahead of second-place Carroll College (Wis.) at 191.  Ripon College was third at 94, followed by St. Norbert College fourth at 89, Beloit College fifth at 75, Concordia University (Wis.) sixth at 51, Lawrence University seventh at 38, Wisconsin Lutheran College eighth at 23, Edgewood College ninth at 14, Lakeland College 10th with five points and the Milwaukee School of Engineering 11th with two points.

 

Gilmore won both the 100-meter high hurdles (16.24) and the long jump (16-1) at the state meet.  Moy won the high jump (4-11 ½) and finished second in the pole vault (10-6).  Shacuána Gaines (So., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) won the triple jump (34-9 ¾), while finishing third in the 400-meter dash (62.82).  The Lady Reds collected wins from Ashley Johnson (Sr., Romeoville, Ill.) in the 1,500-meter run (5:07.81), Megan Johnson (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Normal-Community) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:18.73) and Harrington in the discus (145-0).  Laura Pearson (graduated-senior, Twin Lakes, Wis./Schaumburg, Ill. H.S.) was second in the 5,000-meter run (19:29.84), as was Justine Petras (graduated-senior, McHenry, Ill./Woodstock-Marian Central Catholic) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:36.93) and Rendino in the hammer throw (131-2).  Grahovec was third in the 100-meter high hurdles (17.02), as was Sarah Zigman (Sr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) in the pole vault (10-0), Ahvia Greene (So., Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the shot put (37-8 ¾), Hailey Webb (graduated-senior, Racine, Wis./Washington Park) in the hammer throw (131-2) and Danica Johnson (Jr., Saybrook, Ill./Colfax-Ridgeview) in the javelin (94-7).

 

Carthage finished fifth at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center in Kenosha, Wis.  Illinois Wesleyan University won first-ever indoor title with 187.50 points, followed by North Central College second at 160, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 134, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 63, Carthage fifth at 60, Millikin University sixth at 38.50, Elmhurst College seventh at 10 and North Park University eighth with seven points.  Carthage’s Karen Jackson (Jr., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley) won the indoor 5,000-meter run (18:29.54).  Moy finished fourth in the pole vault (10-10), as did Gaines in the triple jump (35-2 ½) and Webb in the weight throw (45-6).
