Women’s Cross Country Fifth at the CCIW Championship;

Karin Wirth and Katie Kummerer Earn All-Conference Honors

 

2011 CCIW Championship:  The Carthage College women’s cross country team (62-52-1) finished fifth at the Saturday, Oct. 29 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Cross Country Championship at the Montrose Harbor and Golf Course in Chicago.  North Central College won its seventh league title with 30 points, followed by Illinois Wesleyan University second at 47, Augustana College (Ill.) third at 80, Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 111, Carthage fifth at 119, Elmhurst College sixth at 126, Millikin University seventh at 214 and North Park University eighth with an incomplete team score.

 

2011 NCAA Midwest Regional:  Carthage closed out its 2011 season by finishing 17th at the Saturday, Nov. 12 at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill.  Washington University (Mo.) won the 38-team regional championship with 24 points, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire second at 115, the University of Chicago third at 146, North Central College fourth at 150 and Wisconsin-Stevens Point fifth with 188 points. 

 

2011 NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championship:  North Central College represented the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin-members at the Saturday, Nov. 19 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championship at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis.  The Cardinals finished 16th in the championship.

 

The Polls:  Williams College (6 first-place votes) was ranked first in the final, regular-season U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, followed by Washington University (Mo., 1 first-place vote) second, Middlebury College third, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College fourth, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology fifth, the State University of New York-Geneseo sixth, Wisconsin-Eau Claire seventh, Rowan University eighth, with Calvin College and Carleton College tied for ninth place.  Washington (Mo.) was ranked first in the final, regular-season Midwest Regional poll, followed by Wisconsin-Eau Claire second, CCIW-member North Central College third, Wisconsin-Stevens Point fourth, CCIW-member Illinois Wesleyan University fifth, Wisconsin-La Crosse sixth, Wisconsin-Oshkosh seventh, the University of Chicago eighth, Monmouth College ninth and St. Norbert College ranked 10th.

 

The Coach:  Stephanie Domin completed her 12th season as head coach in 2011 (915-523-2, 12 years) after serving three years as an assistant coach.

 

The Conference:  The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 66th year in 2011-12, has sponsored women's cross country since 1986.  Wheaton College (Ill.) has won a league-leading nine championships.  North Central College has won seven times, including the 2009-11 championships.  Augustana College (Ill.) has won five times, with Elmhurst College winning four titles.

 

CCIW Runner of the Week:  Jennifer Anderson (Sr., Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids-Christian) from Wheaton College (Ill.) was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin “Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week” on Oct. 25. Anderson finished fourth at the Oct. 21 North Central (Ill.) “Cardinal Open” with a time of 18:39.53.

 

2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Notes:  Christy Cazzola from Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the 6K race with a time of 21:31.10.  Carthage’s Karin Wirth (Jr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) finished 50th with a time of 23:25.70, and Morgan Wiechmann (Sr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) was 70th at 23:56.00.  Katie Kummerer (So., Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale-Central) was 81st at 24:08.70, Lauren Sible (Sr., Oregon, Ill./Byron) 128th at 24:53.80, Katie Schmidt (Sr., Lemont, Ill.) 145th at 25:16.70, Anabel Martinez (Jr., Aurora, Ill./East Aurora) 166th at 25:45.20, and Katie Garringer (Sr., Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) finished 169th at 25:48.60.

 

2011 CCIW Championship Notes:  North Central’s Alicia Zimmerman took individual honors with a time of 22:46.72, while teammate Krista Cota was second at 22:48.58.  Carthage’s Karin Wirth (Jr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) earned All-CCIW honors with a seventh-place finish and a time of 23:38.78.  Katie Kummerer (So., Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale-Central) also earned all-conference honors with a 14th-place finish and a time of 23:58.50.  Morgan Wiechmann (Sr., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) was 28th at 24:40.00, Lauren Sible (Sr., Oregon, Ill./Byron) 32nd at 24:51.51, and Katie Schmidt (Sr., Lemont, Ill.) was 43rd at 25:40.95.  Also running for the Lady Reds were Anabel Martinez (Jr., Aurora, Ill./East Aurora) 47th at 25:53.07, Grace Heal (So., Sycamore, Ill.) 52nd at 26:33.34 and Bridget Driscoll (Jr., Tinley Park, Ill./Orland Hills-Andrew) 54th at 27:00.89.
