Women’s Cross Country 19th at NCAA Midwest Regional;
Lady Reds Finish Fifth at Oct. 31 CCIW Championship;
2009 NCAA Midwest Regional: The Carthage College women’s cross country team (56-48) concluded its 2009 season on Saturday, Nov.14 by finishing 19th at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship at the Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 39-team regional championship with 52 points, followed by Washington University (Mo.) second at 72, Wisconsin-La Crosse third at 98, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fourth at 139, CCIW-member North Central College fifth at 208, the University of Chicago sixth at 237, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) seventh at 251, conference-member Illinois Wesleyan University eighth at 263, Wisconsin-Platteville ninth at 272, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 10th at 278, conference-member Elmhurst College 11th at 298, Wisconsin-Whitewater 12th at 326, Monmouth College 13th at 397, St. Norbert College 14th at 404, Carroll University 15th at 426, CCIW-member Augustana College (Ill.) 16th at 454, Greenville College 17th at 492, Wisconsin-Stout 18th at 517 and Carthage 19th with 567 points.
2009 CCIW Championship: Carthage finished fifth at the Saturday, Oct. 31 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Cross Country Championship at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst, Ill. North Central College won its fifth CCIW title with 48 points, one point ahead of second-place Wheaton College (Ill.) at 49. Illinois Wesleyan University was third at 69, followed by Elmhurst College fourth at 84, Carthage fifth at 122, Augustana College sixth at 138, North Park University seventh at 238 and Millikin University eighth with 239 points.
2008 NCAA Midwest Regional: Carthage (60-21) concluded its 2008 season by finishing 12th at the Saturday, Nov. 15 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Championship at the Saukie Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill. Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 43-team regional championship with 108 points, followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse second at 115, Washington University (Mo.) third at 117, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) fourth at 130, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fifth at 146, the University of Chicago sixth at 158, Wisconsin-Stevens Point seventh at 219, CCIW-member North Central College eighth at 233, conference-member Illinois Wesleyan University ninth at 304, Wisconsin-Platteville 10th at 305, Wisconsin-Whitewater 11th at 354 and Carthage 12th with 358 points.
2008 NCAA Championship: With a fourth-place finish at the Nov. 15 NCAA Midwest Regional championship, CCIW-member Wheaton College (Ill.) earned an automatic berth at the Nov. 22 NCAA Division III Women’s Cross Country Championship at the L.S. Ayres Complex in Hanover, Ind. The Thunder finished 25th at the national championship. Hanover College was host institution for 2008 championship. Wheaton (Ill.) last appeared in the national meet in the 1999 season.
The Coach: Stephanie Domin is in her 10th season as head coach in 2009 (791-403-1, 9 years) after serving three years as an assistant coach.
The Conference: The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, in its 64th year in 2009-10, has sponsored women's cross country since 1986. Wheaton College (Ill.) has won a league-leading nine championships, Augustana College (Ill.) and North Central College have won five times, with Elmhurst College winning four titles.
CCIW “Runner of the Week”: Illinois Wesleyan University’s Liz Ave Maria (Jr., Morton Grove, Ill./Wilmette-Regina Dominican) was named CCIW “Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week” on Oct. 20. Ave Maria placed 28th at the Oct. 17 Wisconsin-Oshkosh “Brook Invitational” with personal-best time of 22:17.
The Polls: Calvin College was ranked first in the final, regular-season U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, followed by Johns Hopkins University second, Wisconsin-Eau Claire third, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology fourth, Middlebury College fifth, St. Lawrence University sixth, Williams College seventh, Washington University (Mo.) eighth, Geneseo State University ninth and Amherst College ranked 10th. Wisconsin-Eau Claire led the final, regular-season Midwest Regional poll, followed by Washington (Mo.) second, Wisconsin-La Crosse third, Wisconsin-Oshkosh fourth, CCIW-member North Central College fifth, conference-member Wheaton College (Ill.) sixth, the University of Chicago seventh, Wisconsin-Stevens Point eighth, CCIW-member Illinois Wesleyan University ninth and Wisconsin-Platteville ranked 10th.
2009 CCIW Championship Notes: Illinois Wesleyan University’s Kerry Devitt won the 6K race at the CCIW Women’s Cross Country Championship with a time of 23:15.30. Carthage’s Morgan Wiechamnn (So., Sleepy Hollow, Ill./Carpentersville—Dundee-Crown) earned All-CCIW honors by finishing ninth at 24:22.80. Karen Jackson (Sr., Bloomington, Ill./Downs-Tri Valley) also earned all-conference honors with a 12th-place finish and a time of 24:38.60. Karin Wirth (Fr., Springfield, Ill./Pleasant Plains) was 29th at 25:28.20, Heather Crowe (Fr., Bensenville, Ill./Fenton) 34th at 25:57.60, and Molly Lawrence (Jr., Plainfield, Ill./Central) was 38th at 26:19.30. Also finishing for the Lady Reds were Lauren Sible (So., Oregon, Ill./Byron) 39th at 26:20.30, Julia Hiett (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) 42nd 26:30.50, Alyssa Poremba (Fr., Bridgeview, Ill./Summit-Argo) non-scoring at 27:30.30 and Anabel Martinez (Fr., Aurora, Ill./East Aurora) non-scoring at 27:30.80.
