A Word from the Department

Heraclitus said “Nothing endures but change,” while Solomon said “There is nothing new under the sun.” Who is right?

Change is a constant. Businesses are faced daily with new opportunities and challenges due to changes in cultures, technology, products, markets and tools. Tomorrow’s business leaders need to be flexible and creative to adapt to these changes, solve the new problems they bring, and be profitable in a changing world.

Some things never change. People have always sought safety, security and relationships. Organizations have always needed to be managed. Tomorrow’s business leaders need to understand how customers and employees are motivated and how to manage them.

When new markets emerge, they need to be evaluated with an understanding of the enduring principles of market behavior. When new corporate divisions are created, they need to be organized with knowledge of individual behavior and organizational theory. When new conflicts of interest arise, managers need a solid foundation in both ethical and legal principles.

In other words, Heraclitus and Solomon are both correct.

Communications tools change, but there's always demand for people who can communicate clearly. The Generally Accepted Accounting Principles get revised, but companies always need people with quantitative skills to manage their finances.

At Carthage College, students choose a specific area of business (such as Accounting or Marketing) while studying a common foundation in economics, accounting, functional business areas and management.

In addition to the common foundation and specific area courses, nearly 60 percent of their education comes from a wide variety of liberal arts areas including history, religion, psychology, philosophy, fine arts, foreign language and natural sciences. This approach to education gives our graduates a wide knowledge base for evaluating new ideas, and refines their writing, speaking and critical thinking skills in a variety of contexts to prepare them for the coming changes they will face over the course of their careers.
