Smeds Executive Internship Program

The Smeds Executive Internship is a summer internship program that allows Carthage students to apply their coursework in real-world settings, and enables companies and organizations to employ students for real-work projects while evaluating them as potential employees. 

Participating companies/organizations have included Abbott Laboratories, Johnson Controls, Diversey, Deloitte, the Milwaukee Symphony, and Jockey International and Sea World. In summer 2011, Carthage students held the following internships through the Smeds program:

  • Spanish and physics — Universe Awareness, University of Leiden
  • Mathematics — Milliman IntelliScript
  • Management and marketing — Walgreens Corporate
  • Biology — University of Chicago Institute for Genomics and Systems Biology
  • History and political science — Congressman Joe Walsh's Legislative Office
  • Communication and public relations — The Chicago Cubs
  • Public relations — The Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation
  • Management and marketing — Johnson Controls
  • Environmental science — Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center Kellogg Biological Station
  • Accounting and finance — Abbott Laboratories
  • Chemistry — Pacific Sands Inc.
  • Theatre performance — Peninsula Players
  • Accounting — Jockey International
  • Marketing — Paris Presents
  • Political Science — Republican Governors Association
  • Marketing — Solo Cup Company

Students are nominated by faculty for the program and must be juniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2. Students of all majors are welcome.

Smeds Executive Interns are typically paid by the companies/organizations and earn a stipend from funds earmarked by the program's benefactor, Edward Smeds, '57, who chaired the Carthage Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2011.

Hiring decisions are made by the employers.
