Many Carthage business students work as interns at nearby companies during J-Term or summer break. These field placements give students career insights, a professional network, and valuable experience in a real work environment.
Major: Accounting
Internship: Jockey International
Accounting major Amanda (Mandi) Djurickovic, of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., thought her internship with Jockey International in Kenosha was only for J-Term. It was a pleasant surprise when she was offered to stay the summer for a full-time internship.
"I am working in the Financial Reporting section of the Finance Department,” Mandi said. “I’m responsible for several bank account reconciliations, writing and entering journal entries, along with many other things.”
Mandi has learned countless things since working with Jockey. “I’ve learned that when you’re applying the rules of accounting in real life, they make way more sense than any textbook; I’ve learned so many new and useful ways to use Excel and other computer programs,” she said. “And more than anything else I’ve learned that ‘Accountants are boring’ is a hugely incorrect stereotype; I have so much fun working with these people that it makes even the busiest, craziest work weeks fun.”
Big surprises? “Not everything you learn in class will be used in the real world,” she said. “So when you are confused about a concept in your accounting class, don’t get scared and think you can’t be an accountant.”
After college Mandi would be happy if her Jockey internship could eventually turn into a job opportunity. “It’s giving me experience in the field where I want to continue my career,” she explains. “Also, I’ve met so many amazing people.”
Mandi has worked for Pam Studrawa in the Office of College Relations since after her high school graduation until she started her internship. She was a Student Ambassador for the Admissions Office. Mandi has helped Steve Marovich with parts of Sports Information. Also, she had the chance to work with John Weiser to help stream basketball and football games. She was a manager for the men’s basketball team and got to watch her dad coach, and her younger brother, Steve, play basketball. “And of course I’ve done all of this while preparing for my post-college life and making great friends,” she said.
