Internships

Many Carthage business students work as interns at nearby companies during J-Term or summer break. These field placements give students career insights, a professional network, and valuable experience in a real work environment.

Andrew Brown, '10

Major: Business Administration, Marketing, and Finance
Internship: Northwestern Mutual 

Andrew Brown, of Hoffman Estates, Ill., began his internship with Northwestern Mutual in October of 2008. He works in the finance department as a financial representative. "I am a financial representative helping clients and their families create financial security and accumulate wealth management techniques," said Andrew.

He has learned many things while interning with Northwestern Mutual. "I've learned how to become more approachable to people and serve individuals needs," he said. "I've learned to align clients' actions with their intentions and the significance of delayed gratification."

After Carthage, Andrew plans to work in the finance field for the rest of his career. "The most current plan is to be hired at Northrop Grumman, or some other large firm, that will encourage me to earn my masters in finance," he explains. "The ultimate goal would then be to become a fund manager and later start my own fund company such as Vanguard or Fidelity."

Biggest surprise? "The biggest surprise so far is when I meet with someone and they turn out to be in a significantly different financial position, good and bad, than I originally anticipated," he said. "This then changes my strategy as to how I can help them."

Andrew has made his experience at Carthage a memorable one. He has been a part of the pep band, served as an RA, and has met tons of friends through other student groups. Next year Andrew will be a student instructor for Financial Management.
